What wildlife viewing opportunities are available on overland truck tours?

You'll get plenty of chances to see wildlife, especially in famous parks like Kruger, Chobe, and the Serengeti. The tours use both the main truck and special 4x4 vehicles to find and watch animals, giving you the best shot at seeing the "Big Five" - lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffalo. As one of our travelers said, "spectacular sightings of animals and great game drives, especially in places like Etosha where animals gather around waterholes."

What kind of weather conditions should I prepare for?

The weather really changes depending on where you are. Take the Serengeti - during the day it can get up to 86°F (30°C), but over in Ngorongoro Crater, nights might drop to 50°F (10°C). If you're mainly interested in seeing wildlife, plan your trip during the dry season from May to October. The wet season, from November to April, gives you greener scenery but the roads can get pretty muddy.

What type of accommodation can I expect on an overland truck tour?

You'll mostly switch between camping and simple lodges. When you're camping, like at Merry Pebbles Camp near Kruger Park, you'll sleep in good quality dome tents that come with bug nets and thick mattresses. Some nights you'll stay in hotels - the Airport Game Lodge in Johannesburg is one example. One of our travelers noted, "the campsites were a lot better than expected with reasonable showers and good facilities."

What kind of meals are provided during overland truck tours?

You'll usually get 2-3 meals a day, mixed between meals your guide cooks and local restaurants. For instance, in Victoria Falls, you might have lunch at the local Lusumpuko Women's Club. One of our travelers mentioned, "the food was excellent, the CEOs cooked great meals, and there was always consideration for dietary restrictions." You'll also have some meals on your own so you can try local spots that interest you.

What optional activities are available during free time?

You can add lots of extra activities to your trip. At Victoria Falls, you might want to take a scenic flight ($150-284 USD) or try whitewater rafting ($120 USD) or bungee jumping ($168 USD). In Swakopmund, people often go sandboarding (700 NAD), skydiving, or take flights over the Skeleton Coast (4800 NAD). You can also do things like wine tasting, visit local villages, or take boat trips. It's up to you which extras you want to add.

What's included in the transport setup on overland truck tours?

Most of your travel will be in specially built trucks (called Landos) with big windows, comfy seats, places to charge your devices, and room for your bags. For example, if you're going from Cape Town to the Serengeti, these trucks have roofs that open up for better wildlife viewing. When needed, you'll switch to 4x4s for certain safari drives. One traveler told us, "The trucks are surprisingly comfortable for long distances, with good legroom and regular stops every few hours."
