While you can start from places like Fethiye or Kusadasi on the coast, Istanbul's mix of Byzantine and Ottoman history makes it an ideal first stop. Looking at our booking patterns, you'll want to lock in your trip about 3 months (99 days) ahead, especially if you're eyeing popular activities like those Cappadocia balloon rides. If you're watching your budget, early spring or late fall often have better deals, with daily costs running between $50-100 for comfortable accommodations and food. Getting around Istanbul is pretty straightforward with trams, ferries and buses to all the main sites like the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, but our first-time visitors really appreciate having a local guide - especially for navigating the Grand Bazaar and learning about Turkish customs.

Some of our customers who've done the larger bus tours with companies like Eskapas mentioned the quality can be hit or miss, and you might spend more time than you'd like on the bus between stops. The private and small group options tend to work better for most people - you get more attention from the guide and can move at a more natural pace. The way these companies adapted during Covid shows a lot about how they operate. Tour Altinkum was particularly good about working with travelers on rescheduling and refunds, which isn't something every company managed well during that time. Their local knowledge really came through when plans needed quick adjustments.
