What people love about Hiking & Trekking Tours in Turkey
- Walking Turkey's Turquoise Coast
We booked a walking holiday that was rated easy. The walks were really interesting and the distances were not too long. The underfoot terrain was very rough and made for hard going. When we walked the aqueduct, there were very severe drops to one side. With uneven tracks, the potential for a catastrophic fall was evident. I felt uncomfortable on more than one occasion, even though it was a walk I wanted to do. PS The meal at the village was excellent
- Walk the highlights of the Lycian Way
I would have liked more hiking and less stopping for lunches at restaurants. I prefer to be on location with a flexible approach to lunch stops. I thought our guide could have explained the routing better and should have been more engaging. I enjoyed the views, the culture and the locations chosen. The standard of accommodation varied and I was disappointed not to have hot water on arrival (especially having hiked and had a swim in the sea) and first thing in the morning. Otherwise, all good.
- The Heritage Trail of Efeler
Efeler is more than a classic trail. It is a cultural road, a unique culture of the Aegean reagon visiting mountain villages and wonderfully scenic mountains. The trail is sometimes challenging for me. To walk lightly and with good equipment is critical. Also to use a local travel agent is important, because the trail signs are not fully applied yet.
What our customers ask about Hiking & Trekking Tours & Trips in Turkey
What are the best regions and trails for hiking in Turkey?
Turkey's hiking landscape spans three distinct regions each offering unique experiences for outdoor enthusiasts. The 500km Lycian Way stretches from Antalya to Fethiye combining coastal paths ancient ruins and mountain vistas. In central Turkey Cappadocia's Rose Valley and Red Valley present otherworldly rock formations and historical cave churches. The verdant Black Sea region features the Kamilet Valley and Storm Valley where dense forests meet mountain streams. A TourRadar traveler shared: "The scenery is extraordinary and the local people were so warm and welcoming. A touch to a really different culture which along with the perfect organization made this holiday truly memorable."
What is the best time of year for hiking in Turkey?
Each region has its prime hiking season. The Lycian Way works best in spring (April-May) or autumn (September-October) with comfortable temperatures around 20-25°C. Cappadocia hiking peaks in May-June or September-October avoiding summer heat. The Black Sea trails open up from June to September when snow clears and paths dry out. A TourRadar traveler noted: "If you go in October be prepared for it to be cold at night but the hiking conditions during the day are perfect for exploring places like Badara Plateau and the Storm Valley."
How challenging are the hiking trails in Turkey?
The trails accommodate various fitness levels. Lycian Way routes involve moderate 4-7 hour daily walks with elevation changes of 200-600m. Cappadocia presents gentler terrain with 3-4 hour walks and elevation shifts of 300-400m through Zemi and Pigeon Valley. The Black Sea region offers more demanding routes including climbs to high plateaus like Pokut at 2032m. A TourRadar traveler shared: "The walks were relatively easy but varied passing through bizarrely beautiful landscapes with plenty of historical sites to explore along the way."
What type of accommodation is available during multi-day hikes?
Lodging options reflect local character and comfort levels. The Lycian Way features boutique hotels in Kas and family guesthouses in Ucagiz. Cappadocia offers distinctive cave hotels like Dreams Cave Hotel in Goreme and Sobek Stone House. Black Sea hikers stay in mountain hotels and traditional highland houses including the Hasimoglu Hotel in Ayder Plateau. A TourRadar traveler noted: "The Dreams Cave Hotel is a small boutique property nestled among the magnificent rock formations set at the foot of Ortahisar Castle."
How long are typical hiking days in Turkey?
Daily hikes range from 4-7 hours covering 8-18km based on region and route. Lycian Way tours average 5-6 hours and 11-13km daily. Cappadocia features shorter 3-4 hour walks spanning 8-12km through valleys. Black Sea routes vary from brief valley walks to full-day plateau treks. A TourRadar traveler mentioned: "Some of the day walks were quite short in Cappadocia while the Lycian Way offered longer more challenging days with rewarding coastal views."
Can I combine hiking with cultural experiences in Turkey?
The trails weave through Turkey's rich cultural fabric. Hikers on the Lycian Way explore ancient ruins at Patara and Olympos. Cappadocia routes include stops at the Goreme Open Air Museum and underground cities. Black Sea trails connect to traditional village life and local customs. A TourRadar traveler shared: "Walking through villages and seeing local people going about their everyday activities was fascinating. The way of life in the cities has changed so much but we saw things that were timeless."
