  • Days 1-3

    Istanbul

    Start your trip in Istanbul's historic center. Get to Hagia Sophia before 8:30 AM to avoid tour groups. Visit the Blue Mosque next but remember to dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered. The Basilica Cistern looks best in mid-morning light when you can take great photos of its 336 columns. On day two explore the Grand Bazaar. Bring cash and get ready to negotiate.   • Days 1-2

    Istanbul

Remember to wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees.   • Days 1-2

    Istanbul

    Pamukkale

    Drive about 3 hours to see Pamukkale's white calcium terraces. You'll need water shoes to walk on the travertines. "Visit the ancient pool in the morning – by afternoon it gets crowded and the water feels less clean."

    Silk Road to Cappadocia

    Take a scenic 7-hour drive along the ancient Silk Road. Stop at the 13th-century Sultanhani caravanserai. When you get to Cappadocia, try staying in a cave hotel for the full experience.

    Cappadocia

    Ankara to Istanbul
