  • M

    Marilyn

    Asked on February 3rd, 2026

It seams that Jan-Feb or Aug-Sept seem to be the best times to see and photograph the wildlife. Would you agree? And what is the relative benefit between these two periods? OR Why come in early part of year vs. later part of the year? My primary goal is to see and photograph the wildlife.

    Tour Details
    • Zara Tours (Zara Tanzania Adventures)OperatorWritten February 2026

Yes, I would agree January–February and August–September are both excellent periods for wildlife viewing and photography in Tanzania. The difference comes down to what you want to photograph and how you prefer the landscape and conditions.

      January–February (Early Year)
Best for: calving season, dramatic wildlife behavior, greener scenery
This is the calving season in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area.

Thousands of wildebeest give birth, which attracts predators such as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas excellent for action and predator photography.
The landscape is lush and green, offering beautiful backgrounds.
Fewer tourists compared to peak season, allowing for more relaxed game drives.

Birdlife is outstanding, with migratory birds present.
Ideal if you want: intimate wildlife moments, newborn animals, predator interactions, and vibrant green scenery.

      August–September (Later Year)
Best for: river crossings, high animal concentration, classic safari scenes
This period is famous for the Great Migration river crossings in the northern Serengeti.
Wildlife gathers around rivers and permanent water sources, making animals easier to spot.
The dry season means short grass and dusty plains, which are perfect for clear, classic wildlife photography.

Very reliable sightings of big cats and large herds.
Ideal if you want: dramatic river crossings, large herds, and iconic dry-season safari photographs

      So… when should you come?

In short both periods are excellent the "best" time really depends on the style of wildlife photography you're most excited about. I'd be happy to tailor the itinerary specifically around your photography goals.

    • M

      Marilyn

      TravelerWritten February 2026

Is there any advantage going July vs. Aug/Sept (range of wildlife to see, weather, crowds, etc.)?

    • M

      Marilyn

      TravelerWritten February 2026

In reviewing the itinerary of your 11 day safari, I noticed that 2 days say "Relax for a full day in the Serengeti". Does that mean there are no scheduled activities those 2 days? Will there be opportunitites for drives thru the park?

    • Zara Tours (Zara Tanzania Adventures)OperatorWritten February 2026

2 days Serengeti means there is a schedule a game drive at Serengeti

    • Zara Tours (Zara Tanzania Adventures)OperatorWritten February 2026

If your priority is a broad range of wildlife cleaner photography conditions and fewer vehicles July is an excellent choice. August–September is best if river crossings are the main focus but July offers a more balanced and relaxed safari experience.

looking at brief itinerary, i see that one of the checks are "witness the great wilderbeast migration" but when i look at the details, i don't see many details about the great migration. can you please elaborate on where will we see the great migration and how many days will be dedicated to the great migration?

    • Zara Tours (Zara Tanzania Adventures)OperatorWritten March 2025

For the best chances to witness the Great Migration in 2025, target your travel dates between July and October, specifically focusing on the northern Serengeti and the Maasai Mara, where the iconic river crossings occur. Here's a more detailed breakdown: July to Early September: This period is known for the dramatic river crossings of the Grumeti and Mara Rivers, which are a highlight of the migration. Late July to Early September: The herds are typically in the northern Serengeti, near the Mara River, making this the prime time for witnessing the crossings. August and Early September: This is a peak period for migration activity, with large herds crossing the rivers. October: The migration continues, with herds moving south towards the calving grounds in the southern Serengeti.
