The Gorilla to Cape Town tour includes a great mix of wildlife, scenery and cultural experiences as you travel down through East and Southern Africa. You'll enjoy game drives in some of Africa's best national parks, visits to conservation projects such as Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary and Africat, time by Lake Malawi and the Namib Desert, plus highlights like the Great Zimbabwe Ruins, Matopos National Park and the chance to visit Zanzibar Island and to trek to the enadangered mountain gorillas.

    Asked on November 27th, 2025

how much extra money do I need for the 76days to spend? I'm Australian, do I need only a visa for Rwanda? If not what other visas I need? what is the local payment money for? Do I need to pay for national parks entry fees? Is there any other entrance fees that are NOT included in the extra activities that I need to know?

    • Absolute AfricaOperatorWritten November 2025

Spending money: $1,530 - $1,845 USD. Visas: $270 USD. On an Australian passport you will need visas for Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Namibia. You will need to apply prior to departure for a Uganda, Kenya and Namibia. For Tanzania and Zimbabwe, these should be able to be obtained upon arrival at the border. Local Payment is $850 USD payable on Day One to your trip leader to cover expenses that need to be paid in cash to local businesses en route.

Is there a chance to know roughly how many people have already booked this tour?

    • Absolute AfricaOperatorWritten November 2025

At the moment, there are 7 people booked on for the Gorilla section of the tour. After Uganda, you will travel as a smaller group through to Kenya. In Arusha the group size is currently around 11-13 travellers through to Cape Town.

    • D

      Darren

      TravelerWritten November 2025

Confirming that I shouldn't be alone at any point of my tour right? Do you know how many changes or like other group tours will be throughout the length of this trip? Will any group leaders change as well?

    • Absolute AfricaOperatorWritten November 2025

At this stage the minimum number that is booked is 4. There are points where people can get on and off, with main change in Arusha. There are 2 others booked on the whole tour and 6 others from Arusha to Cape Town. We might swap tour leaders or trucks along the way due to regulations in Southern Africa.

    Asked on November 16th, 2025

What is the average age of this trip?

    Age Range
    • Absolute AfricaOperatorWritten November 2025

The age range on our tour is usually between early twenties through to late thirties, whilst trip to trip the window is often much wider. On every other trip there are travellers in their forties, fifties and quite regularly sixties on the truck, as well as the occasional teenager.

  • L

    Laurie

    Asked on June 23rd, 2025

Just was enquiring about a tour that says the duration is 76 days but the tour only includes a total of 58 nights camping and 8 nights dorms. Is that correct?

    Tour Details
    • Absolute AfricaOperatorWritten June 2025

That is correct as there are some nights during the tour set aside for overnight optional excursions. Most people do really enjoy these options but if you are not interested, you then stay back at camp with the truck and driver and you would then just pay camping costs direct to the campsite for the relevant nights. This is usually approx 10 USD per night. The overnight optional excursions on the Gorilla to Cape Town tour are: Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater Safari (2 nights/3 days), Zanzibar Island (4 nights), Lake Kariba houseboats (2 nights), Okavango Delta (2 nights). The Zanzibar Island tour is payable in advance whereas the other activities you pay for once out in Africa.

    • Absolute AfricaOperatorWritten December 2023

Most longer tours would be via Overland Vehicles and include camping and shared camp duties. Because of this, all traveler would need to be 18 years or older. However, I have sorted out all tours that would allow a 3 year old on tour.

    Transport
    • Absolute AfricaOperatorWritten March 2022

We usually run every scheduled tour even if the number of people who have booked is small, but if only 2 or 3 people have booked then we try to see if we can amend the itinerary to join up with a tour that is running.

    • Absolute AfricaOperatorWritten June 2022

With regard to Zanzibar it will be possible just to book the ferry with us and you can then make your own accommodation and transfer arrangements with your friend on the island.

    • Absolute AfricaOperatorWritten June 2022

We will take toilet stops as we travel by the side of the road as we travel.

    • Absolute AfricaOperatorWritten June 2022

    Asked on March 8th, 2022

Could you please give me a quote for 2 persons for the 21/08/2022 departure. I would like to be able to bring an folder stretching bed. Camping is fine but can not sleep on the ground. Can I have a list of other accommodation that can be booked at the different locations if possible in advance. When do we pay for the optional tours. I noticed in the pricing the cost of $1,182.00 is local payment. Is this an add on cost at the being of the tour and at what currency. I have an vegan traveller. Do you cater for vegans?

    Price / Availability
    Transport
    • Absolute AfricaOperatorWritten March 2022

The price of the Gorillas to CapeTown tour is £2665 per person and there is a local payment of U$850 per person, which needs to be paid in USD cash to the tour leader on day one of the tour. You can bring a stretcher, but it should fold up to the size of a suitcase/large bag due to the space on the truck. At quite a few of the campsites there is the option to upgrade to a room, this cannot be booked in advance but will need to be booked and paid on the spot as you go along and is subject to availability. Prices range from U$10 to U$100 per night per room depending on the campsite and room type. The optional trips that need to be paid for in advance are the gorilla permit (£570 pp) and the Zanzibar excursion (£245 pp). We can cater for vegans, just let us know this when you book and we will inform the tour leader so he/she can take this into account for the meal preparations.

    Asked on February 19th, 2016

When is the best time to view the migration?

    Other
    • Absolute AfricaOperatorWritten February 2016

The prime time to visit the Serengeti in Tanzania is usually regarded as being from late November through to March when the big herds of wildebeest, Thomson’s gazelle and zebra head on to the southern plains of the Serengeti.

To get the best viewing on the other hand in Kenya's Masai Mara July through to September are usually regarded as the best months.

  • R

    Raymond

    Asked on February 15th, 2016

    What is the local payment?

    Other
    • Absolute AfricaOperatorWritten February 2016

The local payment is a separate payment from the initial price you pay before you leave. If a local payment is required it will be shown with the trip price. This second payment is made in Africa at the start of your trip. It is payable in USD. The local payment provides us with the means for expenses that need to be paid in cash to local businesses en route to be arranged in the most cost effective manner possible, a saving we can then pass on to you. It also means we can operate in a way that directly supports local businesses and wildlife authorities as we travel. Local Payment will not be changed once you have booked your travel arrangements.

    Asked on February 15th, 2016

How much will this trip really cost me?

    Price / Availability
    • Absolute AfricaOperatorWritten February 2016

The costs to consider when travelling overland are:

      Safari price & Local payment,
      Optional excursions,
      Personal spending money,
      Visas.

We are always very transparent about what a tour will cost and are happy to go through personal, tailored budgets to give you a very realistic idea of what you will spend on your tour - whether you are an adrenaline junkie, souvenir-shopaholic or travelling on a shoestring…
