Western Cape to Orange River
Drive toward the Orange River, which forms the natural border between South Africa and Namibia. You'll pass through Namaqualand, where wildflowers bloom from late July to mid-September. The Orange River, traditionally called the Gariep River, stretches 2,200 km from the Drakensberg Mountains in Lesotho all the way to the Atlantic Ocean, making it South Africa's longest river.

Orange River to Fish River Canyon

Fish River Canyon to Namib Desert
Expect a long drive as you head toward Namibia's famous dunes. Stop at a market or shop to grab supplies for tomorrow's bush camp. This is the most dramatic part of the Namib Desert, so get to bed early to be ready for tomorrow's dawn adventure.

Namib Desert
Wake before sunrise and scramble up the dunes to watch the sun climb above the horizon, with colors shifting dramatically across the sky. You'll explore at your own pace before heading back to your bush camp in the heart of the desert.

Namib Desert to Swakopmund
Travel to Swakopmund, a seaside town surrounded by massive dune fields and the Atlantic Ocean. The town has an interesting German-Namibian atmosphere that makes wandering on foot quite pleasant. The Swakopmund Museum, Namibia's largest privately run museum, features exhibitions on zoology, geology, and technology if you're interested in learning more.

Tonight you'll camp at Okaukuejo Camp overlooking a floodlit waterhole that attracts different species throughout the day and night. An optional evening game drive is available if you're interested.

Grootfontein
Today involves a 180-km round-trip to visit the San people. Walk alongside tribe members, listen to their stories and songs, and learn about their unique Khoisan dialect, commonly known as a 'clicking' language. The San are Namibia's oldest ethnic group and have lived in southern Africa for an estimated 20,000 years. About 30,000 San live in Namibia today, but only around 2,000 still follow a traditional lifestyle in harmony with their environment.

Grootfontein to Bagani
Head to Bagani, a small and friendly town where you'll camp for the night. The area is the homestead of the local Mbukushu kings and their kingdom. Take time to relax and soak in the atmosphere as you watch the sunset over the Okavango River. With luck, you might spot hippos coming out of the water to graze.

Bagani to Okavango Delta
Cross into Botswana and travel south along the Okavango Panhandle to Sepopa. Leave your vehicle behind and travel by boat to your island bush camp. As you glide past birds and lily pads, you'll hear hippos grunting peacefully in the distance. You're now away from civilization in the heart of the delta.

Okavango Delta
After breakfast, head out for your mokoro experience. Each small dugout canoe holds two people and is poled along winding waterways by a local guide. Back at Sepopa Camp, enjoy hot showers, a swimming pool, and a small bar. A scenic flight over the delta is available as an optional activity today.

Bagani to Chobe National Park
Depart Bagani and drive to Chobe National Park. Grab a window seat and watch the rolling landscape pass by, or play road trip games with your travel mates. You'll cross into Botswana at the Goma border, the gateway to the park. Once there, an optional cruise down the Chobe River is one of the best ways to spot hippos, elephants, and buffalo.

Petauke to South Luangwa National Park
After breakfast, travel to a workshop in South Luangwa where local craftswomen transform snare wire from poaching traps into beautiful African bush-inspired jewelry. Watch as they demonstrate their craft and try coiling or hammering wire yourself. Each sale supports anti-poaching patrols dedicated to regional conservation. Continue to South Luangwa National Park, where animal concentration around the Luangwa River and lagoons is among Africa's highest. Expect many elephants, buffalo, leopards, Thornicroft's giraffes, lions, and around 400 bird species. An optional river trip is available.

Cross the border into Malawi and continue straight to your camp on the shores of Lake Malawi. Malawi is dominated by its lake, which covers almost a fifth of the country and provides a livelihood for many local people. Fishermen, fish traders, and canoe and net makers ply their trade here. You'll often see fishermen in bwatos (dugout canoes) fishing on the still lake at dawn. Your campsite at Kande Beach is right on the shore, so take time to rest and relax.

Take the ferry over to Zanzibar, known for its spice plantations and coastal charm. Arusha to Ngorongoro Crater
After breakfast, head to Karatu, the gateway to the Ngorongoro Crater. Hike through the Ngorongoro Reserve Forest to Elephant Caves and Endoro waterfalls. The caves got their name from elephants who came to break off calcium-rich rock for minerals. Your trek, guided by an expert local guide and armed ranger, takes you through rainforest while your guide explains local ecology and points out animal tracks. After, tour the local coffee farm in Karatu village to see innovative farming practices and learn about crops like coffee, beans, maize, banana, soya, and peas. Tonight, enjoy a traditional dinner with a local Tanzanian family in their home.

Ngorongoro Crater to Serengeti
Get up early, pack your gear into a six-person jeep, and head out for an excursion into the Serengeti via the Ngorongoro Crater. Enjoy a safari in the crater, spending 3 to 4 hours exploring this perfectly intact volcanic crater. Watch for black rhinos, lions, leopards, elephants, impalas, zebras, and hippos. Then move on to the open plains of the Serengeti, green after rains and brown and burnt in the dry season, the quintessential image of Africa and home to thousands of hoofed animals and fierce predators. Your campsite is within the Serengeti itself.

- Day 47
Serengeti National Park
Wake at dawn and head out on a game drive while animals are most active. Return to camp for brunch around 11 am. Spend the middle of the day relaxing like the animals do. Head out again as the day cools for a second game drive, returning for dinner. Optional: a pre-booked balloon ride over the park replaces part of the morning drive. If you've booked, you'll be picked up before dawn, driven to the launch site, briefed on safety, then glide at tree height for amazing photos. After landing, enjoy a five-star bush breakfast before returning to camp.

Serengeti to Mto wa Mbu
Rise with the sun and enjoy another game drive as you leave the Serengeti. Jump back into your overland vehicle and head for Mto wa Mbu. After setting up camp, take a guided stroll through the farming areas, local homes, and farmlands to get to know the local community and their way of life. Later, enjoy a scrumptious locally prepared dinner in town.

Mto wa Mbu to Nairobi
Set off early and cross the Kenyan border. Continue to Nairobi where your trip ends. You'll be dropped at the finishing point hotel. If you'd like to stay longer, speak to your booking agent about extending your stay.
