Which regions are best to visit in Japan during March?

Central Japan shines brightest in March especially the Kanto and Kansai regions. Early cherry blossoms transform Kyoto's Gion and Arashiyama districts into a photographer's paradise. The gardens of Kenroku-en in Kanazawa and its well-preserved samurai district take on new life as winter fades. According to a TourRadar traveler "Hiroshima and Miyajima Island were particularly moving in March with fewer crowds than peak season." The Fuji Five Lakes area near Kawaguchiko offers clear views of snow-capped Mt. Fuji set against the first signs of spring.

What is the typical weather like across Japan in March?

March brings varied conditions across Japan's regions. Tokyo maintains mild temperatures around 13°C (55°F) while Osaka runs slightly warmer at 15°C (59°F). In mountainous Nagano the cold lingers making it perfect for watching snow monkeys bathe at Jigokudani Onsen. One TourRadar traveler noted "The weather was quite pleasant for walking tours in Kyoto but we needed warm layers for early mornings and evenings." Cities like Kanazawa see temperature swings with nighttime lows reaching 2°C (36°F) making layered clothing essential.

What special events and festivals can I experience in Japan during March?

March fills Japan's calendar with celebrations anchored by the start of cherry blossom season. Tokyo hosts the Anime Japan Festival at Big Sight while Kyoto lights up during the Higashiyama Hanatouro festival. One TourRadar traveler shared "The spring festivals and blooming cherry trees made March an absolutely magical time to visit." The dramatic fire ceremonies of the Omizutori Festival at Todaiji Temple in Nara draw crowds nightly. On March 3rd the nationwide Hina Matsuri displays traditional dolls with notable exhibitions at places like Osaka's Keiunkan Hotel.

How crowded are tourist attractions in Japan during March?

Tourist numbers build throughout March particularly as cherry blossoms begin to open. While sites like Kyoto's Fushimi Inari Shrine and Tokyo's Sensoji Temple see increased foot traffic the crowds remain lighter than April's peak season. A TourRadar traveler observed "Early March was perfect - we could enjoy major attractions without the extreme crowds of cherry blossom season." Morning visits offer the best experience at popular spots like Tokyo's Meiji Shrine and Shibuya Crossing which fill up by midday.

What are the accommodation options like in Japan during March?

March visitors find diverse lodging from modern establishments like Tokyo's Shinagawa Prince Hotel to traditional ryokans such as the Fuji View Hotel in Kawaguchiko. Properties adjust for cooler weather with heated rooms and seasonal amenities. According to a TourRadar traveler "The Candeo Hotels provided perfect comfort during chilly March evenings while traditional ryokans offered unique cultural experiences with their onsen baths." Early booking becomes essential as March popularity grows especially in Kyoto and Tokyo.

How much should I budget for a March trip to Japan?

Daily costs for March tours range from $200-460 depending on comfort level and activities. High-end experiences like the "Simply Japan" tour run about $460 per day covering upscale hotels and comprehensive sightseeing. Budget-conscious travelers find options like "Japan: Tokyo Nights & Kyoto Temples" averaging $242 daily. A TourRadar traveler suggests "Factor in additional costs for meals (around 30-50 USD per day) and optional activities like tea ceremonies or traditional craft workshops."

Are there any March-specific cultural experiences I shouldn't miss?

March opens doors to seasonal traditions including tea ceremonies in Kyoto's gardens the Sumo Spring Tournament in Osaka and the ancient Omizutori water-drawing ritual at Todaiji Temple. A TourRadar traveler recommends "The morning fire ceremony at Fudo-do Temple in Tokyo was particularly atmospheric in March's crisp air." Early visits to Tokyo's Tsukiji Outer Market showcase winter seafood while sake breweries in Takayama offer tastings of seasonal releases.
