Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We are glad to hear you enjoyed the selection of highlights and options on your Rainforests and Reefs tour. The itinerary on this tour takes you from the forest home of the mountain gorillas, through Rwanda and the city of Kigali, before heading through rural Tanzania including the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater; then heading to the Indian Ocean coast and Zanzibar. This 17 day itinerary does suit many of our customers and there are inevitable long drive days required to link up the key places on this trip. There are also not many options for accommodation in the rural sections of this trip and so however long we made the trip, there would still be the need to have some long drives in certain sections. That being the case some of the camps we use are still quite basic as you experienced, and occasionally there can be power cuts or lack of water especially in remote areas like Kisoro. The roads too can present issues at times on an overland trip of this nature. Whilst our crew are experienced and well trained in mechanics, and the trucks are purpose built and always checked and maintained at our workshop prior to heading out on a trip, there will be unavoidable times when issues arise due to the poor road conditions on parts of the route, which are often off the beaten track, such as where your truck was in the Serengeti. At those times, we aways aim to resolve the issue as soon as possible in order to continue with the itinerary with as little interruption as possible, and on this trip we were able to provide a replacement truck as soon as your group came out of the parks to ensure there would be no further issues experienced on your trip. Thank you again for leaving your review and we will be sure to pass on your comments to Patrick and Nash who are always very pleased to hear of positive feedback from their passengers.

i would like to know how the transportation is from one place to another, or if i have to pay an extra flight

    Flights / Transfers
    Transport
    • Absolute AfricaOperatorWritten March 2026

our tours are group participation, overland camping tours. transport in a full equipped and dieseled expedition truck/vehicle is included in the price of the tour and additional flights in Africa are not required. The 18 day Rainforests and Reefs tour is a great way to see some of the best hightlights in East Africa. Starting in Kigali, Rwanda, we transfer you on day 1 through to Kisoro in Uganda to meet up with your truck and tour group. From here we will take a gorilla trek the following day, the permit being included in the price for this tour. In Kisoro you can also choose to visit coffee plantations, a local orphanage, canoe on Lake Mutande or trek to see the golden monkeys in their natural forest home. The journey then continues back to Rwanda for a couple of days in the countryside where you can take bikes out, or try cultural activities such as basket weaving and banana beer making. We stay a night in the capital, with a visit to the Genocide Museum and Memorial, before crossing into Tanzania to stay by Lake Victoria and onto the world famous game parks for safaris in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, again both included in the tour price. The final stretch of the tour takes you towards the Indian Ocean coast, with a stay at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro where you can opt to do a base camp hike if you wish. From the coast we travel over by ferry to tropical Zanzibar Island for the final four nights. We stay in B&B accommodation at the beach for three nights and in Stone Town the capital for the final night, and accommodation, ferry, transfers and a spice tour are all included in the price

    • Absolute AfricaOperatorWritten February 2026

It is great to hear you are interested in joining the tour from Kigali on Day 5. This should be possible and you would then start the tour on the 16th March.

    • Absolute AfricaOperatorWritten February 2026

If you were to start on Day 5 of this tour in Kigali, the price would be GBP £1,950 per person. This would include the camping and dinner on that first night in Kigali. There would be no Local Payment for this.

What is the meet-up time in Kigali on the 21st, and where?

    Tour Details
    • Absolute AfricaOperatorWritten December 2025

We will be departing on the 21st December from a hotel in the Kibagabaga / KG-area of Kigali and would confirm the departure hotel upon booking. We depart very early on the 21st December, normally around 7:30am. Given this, you would need to get in to Kigali for the night prior to departure (20th December).

    Asked on February 1st, 2025

Can we upgrade accommodation on this tour

    Accommodation
    • Absolute AfricaOperatorWritten February 2025

As the tour is primarily a camping tour, we do always recommend that any passengers would be happy to camp for the duration of the tour. For this tour we do spend a 3 nights in dorm accommodation and also in Zanzibar we spend 4 nights in B&B accommodation, in total there are 11 nights camping. There are options to upgrade at some of the campsites at which we stay, however these cannot be pre-booked or guaranteed as it is done on a first come, first serve basis.

    Asked on September 2nd, 2024

Where and when (time) does the trip start in Kigali? Is there a return transfer from the hotel in Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam on the last day? If yes: to where exactly, and at what time? Absolute Africa has different prices. Is there a best price guarantee? Is there a landline number in Germany or WhatsApp for further information if needed?

    • Absolute AfricaOperatorWritten September 2024

This trip departs first thing on day 1 and so we recommend you arrive into Kigali the day prior to departure. You can book accommodation in the city for a night and we recommend Pili Pili Boutique Hotel or Yambi Guesthouse. The trip now includes the Zanzibar accommodation and so there are 18 nights included in total: 11 nights camping, 3 nights dorm accommodation in a lodge or similar, & 4 nights B/B accommodation on Zanzibar Island. The trip includes the ferry from Dar es Salaam TO Zanzibar but the trip finishes on Zanzibar island and there is an international airport there. You can fly out any time the day after the trip finishes, so on 18th November. If you prefer to fly out of Dar es Salaam then we can book the return ferry for you for £35 GBP and you can return to the mainland with the tour leader and group that is continuing their tour further south. You can then book flights from Dar any time after 4pm on the 18th November.

    Travel Support
    • Absolute AfricaOperatorWritten May 2022

We are restarting all of our tours from the end of June and our crew and staff are currently preparing for this. Optional activities have not changed due to Covid and the highlights on the tours are all still the same as before and as advertised. We are running at reduced capacity over the northern hemisphere summer months and the trucks are busy with some trips fully booked including the July and August Rainforests and Reefs. Tours departing from the autumn have better availability. For Absolute Africa tours we do require you to have insurance in place prior to travel. You will need to ensure that the policy understands the nature of the trip and covers activities such as gorilla trekking, white water rafting, hiking etc.
