This tour was amazing! The itinerary was well thought-out and didn't leave anything to chance, or miss anything I wanted to see. It felt very comprehensive, though, of course, there's always more to see wherever you go. I was impressed with Intrepid's concern about safety on activities (they risk assess all activities that are recommended by their guides) and ethics, both re: animal welfare and cultural safety.
I was expecting the food to be very basic and not particularly exciting but I was wrong. This tour includes a cook, and your "participation" in cooking basically just includes shopping food up - the cook plans your meals and actually cooks them. Which makes for a more relaxing time. Not only that but the food was amazing. Curries, pasta with excellent sauces, lamb chops - you name it, we had it. And they catered well for vegetarians as well.
In particular though, the team really made this trip worthwhile. I particularly want to that Chris, Peter, and David (CT to Nairobi section) for making things feel so comfortable, and making sure everyone felt safe during the trip. I also really appreciated Chris's knowledge of the areas we traveled through, which he shared around campfires at night.
Overall, I highly recommend this tour as a very comprehensive 'introduction' to Southern and Eastern Africa. I would absolutely travel with Intrepid again given the high quality of service. Show more

What are more details about the accommodations? I am celiac/gluten free, would I be able to accommodate my allergy on this tour? Are there any upgrades available for lodging?
The accommodations of the trip will be a mix between; Camping (with facilities), Camping (with basic facilities), Camping (without facilities), Chalet, Hotel, Bungalow, Hotel with shared facilities. We are able to accommodate any dietary needs. Food options may be limited and we do suggest to stock up on snacks and things just incase.

Is there anyway of upgrading (for a fee of course) accommodations prior to the trip?

What other expenses must be taken in consideration for this trip?
Budget a sensible amount for meals not included, drinks, shopping, optional activities, tipping and laundry. Meals: USD10-15 per lunch, USD12-25 per dinner. Tipping guide: USD7-14 per day, USD2-4 per staff member per day, USD2 per local guide per day, 10% tip in basic restaurants.

how many people of my age are usually on such tours? i assume that one can do washing en route?
our groups are a completely mixed bag and on a trip like this you can expect to have people joining in their 20's-70's. As it is a combo tour (aka. made up of shorter tours), you can expect the group to also change throughout. Right now, I have people booked on all sectors with ages ranging from 30's to 60's. Solo travellers and pairs. The group might change/fill up in the coming weeks but that's a bit of a snapshot. Washing is definitely possible along the way and the Tour Leader will be there to help you and advise when it's available so you can 'budget' accordingly.

Payment information
For any tour departing before November 20th, 2026 a full payment is necessary. For tours departing after November 20th, 2026, a minimum payment of $400
is required to confirm your booking with Intrepid Travel. The final payment will be automatically charged to your credit card on the designated due date. The final payment of the remaining balance is required at least 60 days prior to the departure date of your tour. TourRadar never charges you a booking fee and will charge you in the stated currency.
Some departure dates and prices may vary and Intrepid Travel will contact you with any discrepancies before your booking is confirmed.
