Reply from: Absolute AfricaThank you for your review, Paul, and great to hear that you have come away with great memories and experiences from your time in Africa. Some great tips there too! As we always say, age is just a number and if you are happy with the style of trip and the fact there will generally be more passengers in their twenties and thirties (as you were), then this trip can cater for any age. We look forward to welcoming you back on the truck in the future, should you wish to see some more of this great continent!Show more - MMargaretJanuary 24th, 2019For the price, the trip was amazing. Reply from: Absolute AfricaThank you for taking the time to leave your review, Margaret. We are glad to hear that you had a great time and saw all the wildlife you came to Africa to see on your trip. Our tours are affordable, camping safaris. Basic facilities are often the norm, as you mention. Rougher conditions are generally short-lived, with facilities then available the next day when we move to the next campsite. On the African Sky particularly we travel through some very remote areas though, such as in rural Tanzania, and the area by the gorilla parks. Amenities such as power and water (for washing) can become an issue on occasion. Our travellers usually appreciate time on the road less travelled, rather than solely sticking to the main tourist routes. We will though keep searching out for the best facilities we can, and ways to ensure all is as comfortable as possible including ensuring the best meals available and adequate measures to keep food fresh. With regard to food, it is not as easy to source a large range of foods. Fresh fruit and toast is a regular on tour, as well as cereals, whilst we do also endeavour to mix things up where we can by doing cooked breakfasts etc at times. Eggs particularly are a popular option for those days we have more time particularly. Again, with evening meals we tend to stick to stews with rice or potatoes, or pasta dishes, that are filling and tasty. We generally find that clients are happy with the food on offer and are very sorry to hear you did not enjoy it so much. We are concerned to hear your comment regarding the guides’ language skills, and particularly your comments on the vehicle and guide for the Crater. We will follow up with our different operators to see where there can be improvements. Especially good performance standards for the Crater safari are critical, and your comments will be addressed at the earliest. Thanks again for your review. We appreciate your feedback.Show more - MMattDecember 11th, 2017The two of us (my wife and I age 32) were quite happy with the trip. Reply from: Absolute AfricaThank you for taking the time to leave a review. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed the tour overall and particularly the wonderful wildlife for which Africa is so famous. The tips you have given are useful points and these we specifically outline in our pre-departure material to help clients prepare well for their tour. Our tour leaders are on hand throughout the tour to assist with suggestions of how much money will be required through each country and they are also always available to discuss any optional activity on offer en route. Estimated drive times are also detailed in our pre-departure information and we always aim to break up the necessary long drive days to cover the vast distances between the big highlights with shorter drive days and breaks in the itinerary, such as the drives in Rwanda and the few days spent in Kisoro. The African Sky is a concise programme which packs arguably all the key highlights of East Africa - the Masai Mara in Kenya, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania and the gorillas in Bwindi, Uganda - into a 15 day itinerary. Whilst this does require long drives, particularly from Tanzania into Rwanda, this does suit the majority of our clients who may often be time-poor and wish to see all these parks in a short space of time and at a very competitive price. We are sorry to hear of your disappointment with how your gorilla trek was organised. We have a partner in Kisoro who does assist in organising the gorilla trekking as this is his particular area of expertise and we haven’t previously had issue with this arrangement. We fully appreciate that the gorilla trek is the top highlight for most of our passengers travelling in this region. We are committed to providing a positive experience on each trek and have very rarely had any negative feedback. Where only 8 people are allowed to trek one gorilla group at a time, it is quite a task for the staff at the park to ensure that everyone is in a group matching their specific expectations and, as the gorilla groups are constantly on the move as they please, trek timing is always variable too and cannot be guaranteed. Usually the main point of concern is that a group may not be found at all after hours of trekking. Where there are any issues though at all on a tour, it is usually best to notify the tour leader as well as the office at the earliest possibility so that we may look into the issue and assist where possible. We appreciate this would have been after the event, as the tour leader will not routinely go on the treks themselves. As a result of your comments though we will talk to our tour leaders to ensure that they are all aware of the need to brief the group prior to the trek day and provide more clarity around the nature of the treks. Thank you again for your review.Show more

Asked on October 1st, 2025Could you please provide more details on the itinerary, the inclusions, and the type of accommodations used for this tour?
Absolute AfricaOperator•Written October 2025The African Sky tour begins in Nairobi and ends in Kigali. This is a camping tour with three nights spent in local lodges. We provide three person dome tents (used for two people) and a sleep mat, but you will need to bring your own sleeping bag, a pillow and a sleeping bag liner. Upgrades are available at some campsites on a first come, first serve basis.

Asked on February 15th, 2025Would I share the tent with other people? I prefer to sleep by alone. If I share, how many people would I share with? I need to keep in contact with my family and business people. Will WiFi access be available so that I can email or WhatsApp people? How often would the WiFi be available?
Absolute AfricaOperator•Written February 2025Our trips are generally designed for solo travellers to pair up with other travellers of the same sex to share a tent. Our tents are three man tents but we only sleep two per tent. If it is very important for you to have your own tent then you can specify this on the booking form and we can make one available to you on your own. WiFi is available at quite a few campsites along the route and you can expect to get online at least once a week and sometimes this will be more often. You may also like to get a SIM card if you wish to use the local networks as you travel too which are usually quite good value.

Asked on March 19th, 2022What is the camping like? Do guests do the work around camp, or the staff? Do Guests help with cooking? Are there sleeping-bags for rent?
Absolute AfricaOperator•Written March 2022All our tours are group participation tours and so everyone helps out with the cooking, cleaning and washing up and this is generally done on a rota basis. The tour leader is always on hand to offer help where needed, whether with ideas for meals, shopping, preparation etc. Everyone also puts their tents up and down each day - the tour leader will show you how this is done on day 1 and they tents are pretty easy so are nothing to worry about. The tents themselves are 6'4" X 6'4" 3 man dome tents but are used to just sleep two people so they are more spacious. We provide high density foam sleeping mats but you will need to bring your own sleeping bag as we don't hire these out. We camp at established campsites on our tours and so you will have toilet/shower facilities available to you.

Asked on February 1st, 2017What equipment is provided for camping?
Absolute AfricaOperator•Written February 2017We provide tents, sleeping mats and cooking equipment. The main items we ask you to bring is a sleeping bag, plate, cup, bowl and utensils.

Asked on February 1st, 2017Does this tour accept travellers over 60?
Absolute AfricaOperator•Written February 2017Age usually isn’t an issue as long as the style of travel is clear. Typically we find that, as long as everyone is happy and "up for" the day to day routines and activities, and you are at ease travelling with different ages and eager to get involved with the day to day arrangements, there is no issue at all with senior travellers joining. Most older clients have a ball and really enjoy it all. The groups tend to be quite like minded regardless of age with the prime objective usually being to really get the most out of the wildlife parks and cultural experiences day to day
Just note that the age range on our tours tends to be between mid twenties through to late thirties, whilst trip to trip the window is regularly very much wider and on every other trip there are travellers in their fifties on the trucks, and at times sixties, as well as the occasional teenager.

Asked on February 19th, 2016When is the best time to view the migration?
Absolute AfricaOperator•Written February 2016The prime time to visit the Serengeti in Tanzania is usually regarded as being from late November through to March when the big herds of wildebeest, Thomson’s gazelle and zebra head on to the southern plains of the Serengeti.
To get the best viewing on the other hand in Kenya's Masai Mara July through to September are usually regarded as the best months.

Asked on February 15th, 2016Are there any hidden costs?
Absolute AfricaOperator•Written February 2016The costs to consider when travelling overland are:
Safari price & Local payment,
Optional excursions,
Personal spending money,
Visas.
We are always very transparent about what a tour will cost and are happy to go through personal, tailored budgets to give you a very realistic idea of what you will spend on your tour - whether you are an adrenaline junkie, souvenir-shopaholic or travelling on a shoestring…

Asked on February 15th, 2016What is the local payment?
Absolute AfricaOperator•Written February 2016The local payment is a separate payment from the initial price you pay before you leave. If a local payment is required it will be shown with the trip price. This second payment is made in Africa at the start of your trip. It is payable in USD. The local payment provides us with the means for expenses that need to be paid in cash to local businesses en route to be arranged in the most cost effective manner possible, a saving we can then pass on to you. It also means we can operate in a way that directly supports local businesses and wildlife authorities as we travel. Local Payment will not be changed once you have booked your travel arrangements.
