  6. Day 6

    Strasbourg

Strasbourg sits right on the border between France and Germany, and that cultural blend shows up everywhere in the city. A walking tour typically starts in La Petite France, where the streets feel like stepping back into the medieval period with their narrow lanes and half-timbered buildings. The Cathédrale de Notre Dame is the architectural centerpiece, and the famous astronomical clock inside draws crowds. After touring, you'll have free time to wander the Christmas markets scattered throughout the city. If you'd rather not walk, a guided bike tour covers the city streets and also heads out to Parc de l'Orangerie for a break from the urban center.

  7. Day 7

Basel - Choice of City or Lucerne Excursion

Basel is Switzerland's third largest city and has layers of history from its time as a university, banking, and trade hub. You can explore the medieval town hall and its richly decorated market square on a walking tour, or opt for a guided bike tour that actually takes you through three countries in one day: Switzerland, France, and Germany. The 18th-century patrician homes scattered throughout the old quarters show the wealth the city accumulated over centuries. If a full day in Basel doesn't appeal, you can take an excursion to Lucerne instead, where medieval walls and towers from the 13th century define the skyline and Christmas markets fill the squares. There's also an option to do Basel in the morning and Lucerne in the afternoon if you want to see both.

I am rating this as Good. All went well on the trip - not as many markets open as some closed before we got there or were not open that day we were there. The surprise outside the door was a bit underwhelming - gigantic item to put into luggage already full of purchases - would have been better to have smaller and easier to pack. The staff was excellent and friendly. A last minute change on Covid testing caused some frustration and I felt like the ball dropped on helping the customer. Cologne for 3day prior to flying testing had to change to Amsterdam 24hr testing. We were told this and basically was said you have to do it we are not doing anything now there is a QR code. I felt like - we are done with you now - your problem not ours. I figured out the QR code but then a list of 15 locations came up - some were 20 miles away some 8 miles. I finally went to the Cruise Director and said - "okay which one of these do we pick that is closest walking distance from the ship"? At least he figured it out which took a bit of time. A map to the area would have helped as it took 4 of us over 45 minutes to finally find the testing site. At least we got it done - and had 3 hrs to look around after before the 5pm curfew started on Amsterdam. Other than those few things the trip was nice. First time on Ama and probably will use my other lines instead - far more customer friendly in getting you taken care of with testing etc. But it was a nice trip.
