What is the typical group size for May departures?

      Trevor

      TravelerWritten July 2026

Can solo travelers be paired with similar-age groups? (I will be 36)

    • T

      Trevor

      TravelerWritten July 2026

How many guides are assigned per group?

    • Alpaca ExpeditionsOperatorWritten July 2026

The group size may vary depending on the number of travelers registered for each departure date. Normally, the number of participants is between 14 and 16 people, with 16 passengers being the usual maximum. In exceptional cases, the group size may vary slightly depending on availability and the organization of each departure.

    • Alpaca ExpeditionsOperatorWritten July 2026

According to the group size, we assign the appropriate number of guides to ensure proper attention and support throughout the experience. For groups of this size, we normally schedule 2 guides, who have the necessary experience to accompany and assist all participants during the trek.

    • Alpaca ExpeditionsOperatorWritten July 2026

Regarding the possibility of being grouped with travelers of a similar age, we would like to inform you that groups are not usually organized according to age ranges, but rather based on booking dates and the availability of each departure. For this reason, the same group may include travelers of different ages, including adults and younger participants.

    Asked on June 30th, 2026

Are permits needed to do the hikes and if that needs to be on the visitors to take or if tour operator can provide that?

    Tour Details
    • Alpaca ExpeditionsOperatorWritten July 2026

All of our services already include the necessary permits required to carry out the hikes, so visitors do not need to arrange or purchase any permits on their own. Our team takes care of all the necessary processing and coordination to ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience.

    Asked on April 15th, 2026

Do you have availability for 2 people for the 4-day Inca Trail on May 8-11, 2026?

    Group size
    Price / Availability
    • Alpaca ExpeditionsOperatorWritten April 2026

Inca Trail permits can only be managed and operated by the agency with which they were originally booked. Ministry regulations for the Inca Trail are strict and do not allow us to operate the service for passengers whose permits have been issued through another operator. Any other circuit or tour could still be managed, but in the case of the Inca Trail, no exceptions or reintegration with permits from another agency are possible.

  • B

    Barbara

    Asked on January 31st, 2026

My husband, Peter, will have turned 80 yrs of age by the time we come to Peru, and I will be 68 years of age. We note that you say for people up to 65. We are both very fit and both still working. Last year we successfully climbed Mt Kenya at 4,985 m and the previous year we went trekking in the Himalayas to 4,200 m. Will you allow us to join the trek?

    Age Range
    • Alpaca ExpeditionsOperatorWritten February 2026

There is no problem with joining the trek. We will only ask for a medical certificate as a precaution, to consider any potential issues during the hike. Please don't worry: our priority is always the well-being of the entire group, and we organize the trek with the intention that each participant fully enjoys the entire experience.

    Group size
    Tour Details
    • Alpaca ExpeditionsOperatorWritten January 2026

Circuit 2A for the Classical Inca Trail is already fully booked, as May is a very busy month with many visitors. The good news is that with the 4-day Inca Trail, you will still enjoy two complementary circuits—Circuit 1B and Circuit 3B, offering a full and memorable Machu Picchu experience.

Recommended equipment and personal items: We provide most of the essentials (tents, meals, guides, porters, entrance tickets, etc.). However, it is important that each participant brings the following: - Small daypack (20–25 liters). - Sleeping bag (available for rental if needed). - Trekking poles (optional but highly recommended; also available for rental). - Appropriate trekking clothing: - Quick-dry t-shirts. - Trekking pants. - Fleece jacket or similar for the evenings. - Waterproof and windproof jacket. - Comfortable trekking boots, already broken in (not new). - Sun hat or cap, sunglasses, and sunscreen. - Lightweight rain poncho or waterproof layer. - Water bottle or hydration system (1.5–2 liters). - Headlamp with spare batteries. - Personal hygiene items and toilet paper. - Personal medication and a small first-aid kit (including insect repellent, blister patches, pain relievers, etc.). - Cash in Peruvian soles (for tips or additional expenses). Physical preparation: Although we have had participants who were not particularly athletic and still completed the Inca Trail successfully, we do recommend some light preparation. A 2–3 hour walk, once per week, ideally on uneven terrain or with some inclines, is usually enough to help the body adapt better to the effort. This preparation will allow you to enjoy the trek more comfortably and safely.

Is it possible to meet up with my wife at the summit for pictures?

    • Alpaca ExpeditionsOperatorWritten January 2025

You won't be able to join for the classic photo at the summit, as the permits are for different circuits. One option would be to purchase additional permits for Circuit 2 at 8:00 AM for both of you.

Do porters carry our duffle bags?

    Transport
    • Alpaca ExpeditionsOperatorWritten December 2024

You will pack all your belongings in these duffel bags and give them to your porters in the morning. Whatever you pack in your duffel bags will be with the porters all day and not return until you get to your first camping site.

The 4-day, 3-night Classic Inca Trail with Alpaca Expeditions typically returns to Cusco in the evening on the final day. After visiting Machu Picchu in the morning and taking a train from Aguas Calientes, you can expect to arrive back in Cusco around 7:00 PM.

In the tour transport drop-down information it says hike ends on day 3 and get bus etc but it's a 4 day hike? That's confusing because I thought it meant you're hiking walking for 4 days. If you elect to go on the vista dome train does that mean you get back a bit later to Cusco or is the bus the same bus for the expedition train AND the vista dome or does one bus leave earlier? We have to get to the airport and need the earliest bus. I just wanted to make sure that the tour is 4 days not 3.

    • Alpaca ExpeditionsOperatorWritten November 2024

The Inca Trail is indeed a 4-day trek. You will hike for four days, with the final day culminating in a guided visit to Machu Picchu. Day 4 typically involves an early morning start to reach the Sun Gate and explore Machu Picchu, followed by your return journey to Cusco via train and bus. If you opt for the Vistadome Train, you'll have a more scenic return journey compared to the Expedition Train. However, both train options arrive in Ollantaytambo, from where a shared bus will take you back to Cusco. The bus schedule is aligned with the train's arrival times: Vistadome generally departs slightly later than the Expedition Train, meaning you'll arrive back in Cusco a bit later. If you're on a tight schedule and need the earliest possible return to Cusco for a flight, choosing the Expedition Train might be a better fit, as its bus departs earlier.
