  The driver (Adnan- probably spelled incorrectly) was the best guide on the trip. If there wasn’t another guide in the van, he explained songs on the radio, taught me words/phrases to use, explained culture- schools, health care, what I could tell by how people were dressed, the different things growing that we passed- and a lot more. If I needed to fund something, he helped me do that. The guides at the individual places I/we went (not hired by your program) were amazing: the Hassan 11 mosque, Vollubillis ruins, Atlas studios, for example. My guide in Casablanca was horrible and if not for the mosque visit, that day would have been completely ruined. He took me to a market that was basically a flea market and just kept telling me about how everything there were knock-offs and not to buy them. There was nothing historical or cultural about it and it was a total waste of time. The places he did rush me through- in and out of van to get pictures- I don’t even know what they were. The one place (park I think( that had lots of pigeons and was really interesting), I would have liked to walk around, but he said we had no time. The other guides were good and did know their history. The guide the last day in Marrakech was very good and helped me find and see almost everything I wanted to see, but he seemed to get a little annoyed with me and one other person with us. Me- because I wanted to take longer looking at things and feed and pet the cats; the other gentleman because he was trying to take a lot of pictures. I would also have liked to have had A LOT more information about how things were going to be run, the set-ups, and what we should have been ready for. I did not know how long the car rides were going to be. If I had, I would have brought drinks or snacks with me each time. I also did not know when we left the van each day with a guide we would be out and about sometimes for 3-4 hours without places to buy water. By the 3rd day, I figured out I needed to buy bottles of water the night before to take with me, but you can only carry so many. I’d leave a big one in the van, but if we didn’t get back to that for 3 hours and there was nowhere to get any, that was bad. There was one time I got very dizzy and had to stop the tour and our guide had to go find me water. (This was before I realized how everything worked), because I honestly felt like I was going to faint- which I have never done in my life. And I’m from Florida; I’m used to extreme heat, used to being out in the sun for long periods, and being active. I am not used to having no access to fluids. There was never water in the vans provided for us, and no matter how much I put in, when I got back to our hotels I had to find markets and buys tons of drinks which I spent the evenings getting back in my system. Several places there were not drinks available for us to purchase- Vollubillis for one. Likewise, we would get breakfast in the mornings, which was usually very good, but then we might not eat again until 2 or 3 or even 4 in one case. Being informed of these possibilities would have allowed me to better prepare and made things much more enjoyable. It would also have been nice to have been provided with lists of words/phrases that would help us get by when we were in our own, especially since there are no Moroccan Arabic or Berber language translations on any application available for a phone. I tried using regular Arabic and no one understood that. At one point, I did find one person who understood some French. Most of the hotels were excellent, but I had one without even warm water, and another that had motion sensor lights that did not work, so when I had to go down to the front desk to get a towel (there were none in the room) I tripped on a step I could not see and wrenched my knee pretty badly. At another hotel, the sink didn’t drain and I had to go down and get help for that. At another the toilet didn’t flush. They did send plumbers up both times to fix the issues, but that was a tad frustrating. And you couldn’t get the front desk on the phone so had to get redressed (in my case) and go downstairs to report it then wait for them to get someone up to fix the issues.Show more

The small group size (12 people max) allowed us to move at a reasonable pace while touring. The driver was kind, patient, and very well travelled on our route, stopping for rest breaks as needed. The undisputed highlight of the trip, however, was our guide Zouhir Without Zouhir , we would have just been 'tourists'; with Zouhir and the rest of the tour guides , we were guests. Hassan's storytelling in the ancient Kasbahs of Ouarzazate brought the walls to life, and his local insight in Merzouga made the desert feel like home rather than a foreign landscape. Zouhir and our driver Mohammed managed every logistical detail with a smile, ensuring we could just focus on the breathtaking views. If you are doing this tour, you have to go with Zouhir, guides - Hassan, Sila, and our guide in Marrakesh are a fountain of knowledge and the best travel companions you could ask for! ??
