Itinerary
- Day 1
Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Your climb starts at Marangu Gate where you'll begin trekking through thick rainforest toward Mandara Hut. The hiking is moderate and gives you a chance to find your rhythm before things get more serious. You'll walk through lush vegetation with forest canopy overhead, and the trail doesn't push too hard on this first day. The hut sits at about 2,700m/8,860ft elevation. Pack layers since the forest stays relatively cool and can be damp.

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
From Mandara Hut, you head higher into the moorland zone as the forest gradually thins out. The landscape opens up and you'll notice the vegetation changing as you gain elevation toward Horombo Hut at 3,720m/12,205ft. The terrain becomes more exposed with alpine meadow around you. This day involves steady climbing but the altitude starts to affect how your body feels, so the pace slows a bit compared to yesterday.

Horombo Hut (Acclimatization)
Today you stay put at Horombo Hut to let your body adjust to the higher altitude. Spending a full day here helps reduce the risk of altitude sickness before you continue upward. You might take a short walk around camp to keep moving without overdoing it, or just rest and hydrate. The acclimatization day matters more than it sounds when you're this high up.

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Leaving Horombo Hut behind, you trek across the high-altitude saddle between the two main peaks, Mawenzi and Kibo. The landscape is now pure alpine desert with minimal vegetation and dramatic views of both mountains. Reaching Kibo Hut at 4,703m/15,430ft puts you in the final staging area. The air is thin and the terrain is rocky, so this is a shorter day but the altitude makes it feel harder.

- Day 5
Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Return to Horombo Hut
Your summit push starts before dawn from Kibo Hut. The climb to Uhuru Peak at 5,895m/19,341ft is steep and takes several hours of slow, deliberate walking through the dark. After standing at the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro, you'll turn around and descend the same day back down to Horombo Hut. This is the longest and most demanding day, but you get to sleep at lower altitude again tonight.
