Hi what's the difficulty rating on this? And if I fly into las vegas, do I have to make my way to flagstaff, or can I make my way to meet you at the grand canyon somewhere?

This is a level 3 backpacking trip but that is relative to the Grand Canyon. It is a challenging trip and guests carry about 35lbs with them for the duration. We pick up and drop off in Flagstaff so we are unable to offer transportation to other locations. Most guests fly into Phoenix and then take a shuttle to Flagstaff.

Do YOU provide the backpack that we all carry (i.e. the pack itself, and contents?). I'm fit and 52y/0, but haven't carried a big backpack long periods before – does this often cause problems or spoil enjoyments for first timers? I would aim to stay in Flagstaff the night before so I can make your briefing and return to flagstaff, so flagstaff pickup OK. What kind of time do you normally return into flagstaff on day 4?

    • Wildland TrekkingOperatorWritten November 2023

We provide all of the gear for our trips, this includes: 60-90L pack, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent, trekking poles, all meals and snacks, and guides with expertise to manage and support you along the way. Ideally, new hikers should allow themselves more time to train and prepare before joining one of our Level 3 backpacking trips as it requires you to be able to carry 30-40 pounds. Most of our hikes begin early in the morning on Day 1 and on the last day, we return between 4 pm and 5 pm.

I haven't camped in over 30 years, how difficult is it to adjust (love the outdoors), should I try a small camping trip before committing to this adventure?

    Tour Details
    • Wildland TrekkingOperatorWritten January 2023

We do recommend trying out a smaller camping trip before embarking on a 4-day/3-night backpacking trip. We want you to have a great trip with us, and make sure it's something you'll enjoy. We rate the Rim to Rim a 3 out of 5 in difficulty. This includes: up to 8 miles per day, more than 3000 feet elevation change per day, 35-45 pound backpacks, moderate exposure, and lightly rugged trails.
