    3.5 - Good

We had a good experience with our G Adventure tours to Peru and Galapagos Islands in January 2016 but we did not have as good an experience with the first part of the Highlights of Southern Africa from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls for several reasons, the most significant criticism being the very inadequate bus/van transportation both in South Africa and Zimbabwe. TOO MUCH TIME ON A BUS!!! If an itinerary is going to include this MUCH bus travel you MUST provide a decent bus! The second part of our tour from Victoria Falls to Capetown was more tolerable because of we had a better bus, more suited for longer days. The travel from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls was so uncomfortable due to the poor conditions in the bus. Because of this factor it made some of the activities less enjoyable, we were tired, uncomfortable and sore when we arrived to our destination. Often the activities involved more travel on safari jeeps (jeeps were fine) but you're uncomfortable from the 5 hour bus drive on a substandard bus that it takes away from the safari activity. Also staying closer to the entrance of Kruger park (we had to drive an hour) or within the park would have made Kruger park activities more enjoyable. 1. We felt that the buses that were used on the first part of the tour from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls were very inadequate and very uncomfortable. These were well below our expectations for a G. Adventures tour. There were also safety issues with not enough working seat belts for all passengers and the bus in Zimbabwe had a large crack in the windshield in the driver's field of vision. We give the rating a “2” for these buses. However, the driver's were good. No complaint with the driver's on the first part of the tour. Though it is not G. Adventures fault, we felt the frequent police stops in Zimbabwe were very annoying and counterproductive to promoting tourism in that country. 2. Re: Bus transport between Victoria Falls and Capetown: This bus was up to the standards we expected from G Adventures and a similar bus should have been used for the first two weeks of our tour (shame on you guys!). Barry, the bus driver, was excellent. Everything was going well until this great bus broke down at Hammerstein, Namibia. Barry had to stay with the bus to get it repaired. A few hour wait (at Hammerstein) and another small, substandard transport van arrived with the most inept driver imaginable. He was speeding, on his phone frequently. If you can imagine, he was holding the steering wheel with his left hand and the cell phone in his right hand to his left ear. Hannelie had to tell him repeatedly to stop and he did not. When we stopped for a break we noticed that the left front tire was under-inflated, but the driver refused to address the issue. We were thankful to arrive safely, late that evening at our destination. We had a new bus the next morning with no air conditioning. Eventually, Barry and our original bus caught up with us at Lamberts Bay. 3. Air Flight from Capetown to Johannesburg (day 3): This flight should have been scheduled much earlier in the morning rather that the 12:30 pm departure. If we'd arrived in Johannesburg earlier in the morning we would have had more time to complete the scheduled activities for the day and we would have had more time to drive on Day 4 to an accommodation that was closer to Kruger park, making the next day's travel shorter and travel to the park closer on Day 5, as noted above. We thought the accommodations were quite good. We have no complaints in that regard. We were unable to enjoy one the accommodations in Namibia due to the bus breakdown. We really lost a day there. As noted above accommodations closer to Kruger park would have been more efficient. There was nothing wrong with the accommodations provided outside the park, it was just we had an extra 2 hours in the jeeps when we could have had that extra time in Kruger. We think there's definitely an improvement you could make on the itinerary around Kruger We did experience some communication and organizational issues with our first guide, Tinyiko. The communication issues may have been a result of a language barrier, but often we didn't have a good sense of what our travel itinerary for the day would look like. There were some organizational issues that were frustrating, example arriving in Victoria Falls and having to retrieve our luggage from the van because we weren't advised in advance of appropriate clothing. Also, some confusion around Canadian Visa requirements in Zimbabwe. We were told later and a multiple entry Visa for Zimbabwe/Zambia would have been cheaper than a single entry for Canadians and that this change took place in January 2017. As a result we paid more money than was necessary. Also, there was a mix-up with hotels when we started our trip. We were advised incorrectly by GA (not Tinyiko) to go to a certain hotel. Tinyiko asked for our taxi receipts, but we were advised later that the taxi receipt should have been submitted directly to G. Adventures. (We are still out this money...70 Rand). I found his patience wore thin with our group. We were complaining adamantly about the bus conditions and we also had to stop for toilet breaks more frequently than he deemed necessary. Hannelie, on the other hand, as our second guide from Victoria Fall to Cape Town was a wonderful guide!! We have nothing but praise for her dedication and caring for the group. She walked into a situation where some of the guests were quite unhappy with the first part of the tour, particularly with the bus conditions. She handled some difficult situations extremely well, most notable being the breakdown of the bus (the decent bus we had) in Namibia. She complained to G Adventures about the unsafe driver we had that took us from Hammerstein resort where the bus broke down to our destination that evening (a six hour drive). Hannelie has excellent communication and problem solving skills! G Adventures is very fortunate to have a guide of this skill level!! If we knew Hannelie was our guide it would positively influence our selection of future tours. Request: Given the above information on the transportation we feel a $500.00 credit on future G Adventure booking for both my wife and I would be reasonable compensation. The conditions of the buses were quite poor (and, arguably, unsafe) on the first half of the tour and, knowing there were complaints from several guests on the tour, G Adventures did not take measures to remedy the situation. We have made this request directly to G Adventures but thought TourRadar should be made aware of our concerns and this request for compensation Timothy Seipp and Marie Claudette McCarron, GA Booking Number 992604
