Overnight Flight to Windhoek
Your Namibia vacation kicks off with an overnight flight to Windhoek. You can arrange this either as a private self-drive tour with a rental car or hire a German-speaking driver-guide to handle navigation.

Windhoek
You'll land at the international airport and collect your rental car, then drive to Windhoek for check-in at your guesthouse. The city center has colonial-style buildings and street cafés to explore at your own pace, or you can book a guided city tour that covers the Alte Feste, Christ Church, Supreme Court, and Independence Museum.

Windhoek to Kalahari Desert
Head south into the Kalahari Desert near Botswana in southeastern Namibia, where ancient dunes and yellow grasslands create a landscape for desert-adapted wildlife like meerkats, cheetahs, hyenas, gemsbok, and ostriches. After settling into your accommodation, consider an optional nature tour in the late afternoon to spot local fauna and flora.

Kalahari to Fish River Canyon Region
Continue driving south and stop at the quiver tree forest in Keetmanshoop before reaching your lodge. You'll stay for two nights, which gives you time to explore Fish River Canyon, the second largest canyon in the world.

Fish River Canyon
After breakfast, you'll drive a short distance to Fish River Canyon with your driver-guide. The canyon stretches 161 km long, reaches 27 km wide, and drops 550 m deep, offering spectacular views from multiple vantage points. During the dry season, hiking through the canyon is possible. Return to your lodge for a relaxed afternoon.

Fish River Canyon to Lüderitz
Journey through Aus and the open plains of the Great Escarpment toward Lüderitz, passing wild horses of the Namib along the way. Stop at Kolmanskop, a ghost town that boomed during the diamond rush around 1910. When you reach Lüderitz on the coast, you'll find well-preserved Wilhelmine buildings and chances to see penguins and flamingos around Halifax Island and Bogenfels.

An optional stop at Duwisib Castle, a quirky German colonial remnant, is available. Settle in at the lodge and prepare for tomorrow's desert exploration.

Sossusvlei and Sesriem Canyon
Start early to reach Namib Naukluft Park at sunrise and photograph the dunes as they shift from gold to bright red and orange. Visit Deadvlei and Sossusvlei, clay depressions surrounded by the world's highest dunes, then climb a dune and explore the Salvador Dalí-like landscape of withered trees. Breakfast comes under ancient camel thorn trees, and on the way back you'll visit Sesriem Canyon before relaxing by the pool.

Namib Desert to Swakopmund
Travel to Swakopmund, a small German-influenced coastal town where the world's oldest desert meets the Atlantic Ocean. You'll drive through Gaub and Kuiseb Canyon and detour to Walvis Bay Lagoon, a RAMSAR World Heritage Site and bird sanctuary. Depending on the season, thousands of flamingos and up to 160,000 birds gather here. Once settled in Swakopmund, explore the beach promenade, palm-lined avenues, and parks.

An optional catamaran cruise lets you see seals and dolphins while having fresh oysters and sparkling wine, or you can drive to Cape Cross to visit the seal colony with 80,000 to 100,000 dwarf fur seals.

Swakopmund to Damaraland
Drive a short distance along the Skeleton Coast before heading inland into scenic Damaraland. You'll pass the Brandberg Massif at 2,579 m, Namibia's highest point, and enter one of Africa's least developed regions. This area is home to Hartmann's mountain zebras, giraffes, springbok, endangered black rhinos, and desert elephants. The barren rocky landscapes and dry river courses lead to your comfortable lodge for the evening.

Damaraland Exploration
Head out early through the Otjimboyo landscape to capture sunrise colors and photograph the Brandberg. Explore the mostly dry Ugab River riverbed and if you're fortunate, spot desert elephants. Visit Burnt Mountain with its vibrant red, brown, cream, and purple glowing colors, then discover rock engravings at Twyfelfontein (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the organ pipes, and petrified tree trunks. An optional sundowner tour is available for sunset Brandberg photography.

Damaraland to Etosha National Park
After breakfast, visit Twyfelfontein with its rock engravings and then the Petrified Forest featuring 260 million year old tree trunks in an eroded valley. From there, continue toward the Etosha National Park region, a major highlight. The park became a game reserve in 1907. You'll arrive at your lodge, relax, and prepare for game viewing tomorrow.

Etosha National Park Game Viewing
Experience Etosha Park's full diversity and wilderness by driving east and stopping at various waterholes. Look for zebras, elephants, giraffes, blue wildebeests, oryx, springbok, and kudus. If you're lucky, you might spot nocturnal lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, or jackals during early morning or late evening drives. The park is paradise for bird watchers with hundreds of documented species, and after rains the vast Etosha Pan attracts thousands of migratory birds. Arrive at your lodge near Namutoni Gate at sunset.

Continue exploring the eastern part of Etosha along the salt-encrusted pan with its natural waterholes and changing vegetation zones. The park covers 22,000 square kilometers with diverse landscapes, and almost all southern African mammals, reptiles, and insects can be found here.
