Once you arrive, you'll register with Kilimanjaro National Park authorities and meet your guides and support team. From there, you head into a 3 hour trek through rainforest, covering about 7 km. You'll likely spot Black and White Colobus Monkeys and other wildlife as you make your way to Mti Mkubwa Camp, which sits at 2,750m elevation.

Along the way, you'll see rare plants like violet lobelias. The real highlight comes when you cross the Shira Plateau, which is actually the collapsed remains of an ancient volcanic crater. After crossing Shira Ridge, you reach Shira Camp 1 at 3,600m by day's end.

Your guide will lead some brief excursions to help your body adjust to the altitude, and you can check out the Shira Cathedral rock formation, which is a notable landmark in the area.
