Asked on June 23rd, 2025I don't have any previous experience with high altitude trekking and I am planning to do your 8 day Annapurna circuit trek. Will I be okay with the elevation gain and experience any symptoms of acute mountain sickness? If so what are your safety measures if I do experience this.
Sherpa Expedition TeamsOperator•Written June 2025This trek can be a bit challenging, so we recommend allowing at least 2-3 buffer days in your itinerary. If you experience any symptoms of altitude sickness, it's best to take a rest day and try again the following day. Some beginners have completed the trek without issues, but altitude sickness is unpredictable and can affect anyone. If you start to feel symptoms—or even as a precaution before beginning the trek—you may consider taking Diamox. If symptoms persist, please rest and attempt the trek the next day.

Traveler•Written June 2025So in the scenario where we would have to take a rest day, how does that look logistically? I assume we would be in a group right? Would I hike the rest by myself as the group goes ahead?

Traveler•Written June 2025In the case of medical treatment, what would that look like?
Sherpa Expedition TeamsOperator•Written June 2025For normal medical treatment in Manang, there is a clinic available. Additionally, your guide will carry basic medications that can help with common issues, including altitude-related symptoms. To prevent altitude sickness, it's essential to: Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated with electrolytes, Enjoy ginger tea and garlic soup, which are traditionally helpful, Walk slowly and allow your body time to acclimate. In case of a serious emergency, helicopter evacuation may be necessary. Therefore, it is highly recommended to purchase travel insurance that includes coverage for altitudes up to 6,000 meters, including helicopter rescue and medical expenses.
