  Costa Rica was beautiful, but I would not recommend this tour, especially to travelers in their 30s who expect clear communication, reasonable costs, and basic comfort. On the first night at Hotel Fleur de Lys, air conditioning was not included and I was told I would need to pay extra for it; the mattress was so thin that I could feel the metal bed frame, and the room had one switch controlling both the fan and the light, meaning I was effectively expected to sleep without AC or keep the lights on all night to use the fan. Manny repeatedly said he wanted to set expectations that this was not a resort-style tour, but a working fan and a bed that is comfortable enough to sleep on are basic necessities, not resort amenities. He also repeatedly selected expensive restaurants for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, making the trip far more costly than expected, and was often vague or dismissive when asked about plans, sometimes saying I would not know the place instead of simply sharing the location. On one occasion, he made us return to the hotel for a next-day briefing that could easily have been sent through WhatsApp, refused to say where dinner would be despite being asked several times, and then left while I went to my room to grab my jacket. He also told me he was “99.9% sure” there would be no afternoon return shuttle and advised me to book an airport hotel, only to place me on an afternoon shuttle the next day that would have gotten me to the airport near my flight time, making the hotel booking unnecessary. The constant miscommunication, poor organization, lack of transparency, unnecessary expenses, and substandard accommodation made the experience stressful and disappointing.Show more

  Not enough words to describe how great Gema was! From start to finish she was an excellent tour guide. She showed a great knowledge of Costa Rica. She was very organised and the trip ran so smoothly. She communicated so well with the locals, and if there were any problems along the way we didn’t notice because she dealt with everything. She communicated well with us, even before the trip started to make sure everything was organised. Gema had the most amazing energy, we all loved her instantly. She has such a warmth that made us all feel comfortable on an otherwise daunting trip! We could see that she carried the same energy to whoever she met - it was clear how much the locals at the homestay loved Gema, as well as our bus drivers and anyone we met. Gema provided fun, bubbly, positive energy which was infectious to all of us. Gema went above and beyond her role as tour guide, continuing to help us even after our tour had ended, offering to book dinners for us etc. I couldn’t fault Gema as a tour guide, and think she is a complete asset to TruTravels, she will be great at whatever she does in her future endeavours, and is without a doubt the reason that we loved Costa Rica so much.Show more

  Gema was an absolutely incredible guide. she was obviously very knowledgeable and organized as a guide which made the logistics of the trip run smoothly, but her energy was what made the trip so incredible and memorable. she was so friendly and accepting and was excited to meet new people and include everyone in our activities. even with the locals and people that we were working with, it was so obvious that everyone loves her and being around her. she was able to make you feel comfortable immediately even though it was nerve wracking to do this trip alone with no idea what to expect in terms of relationships and connections with the other girls. she facilitated our connections in the beginning very well with ice breakers and just being an overall ball of good energy that you can relate and connect to very well. Gema was absolutely the reason that this trip was everything and more that i had hoped for when I booked this solo trip to Costa Rica.Show more

  Costa Rica will forever be a cherished memory for me thanks to Gema. Gema has been absolutely amazing for this entire tour — It was my first experience of doing travel this way, and she made me feel so comfortable and welcomed from day one. No question was a silly one, and she provided activities for everyone. She’s been super engaging and active in getting everyone involved with the locals, and that’s made this experience all the more better. Without Gema, this experience would have been a disaster and I feel so honoured to have met and spent this time with her and every other girl on tour. Despite the insane sunburn, getting trapped in what can only be called a monsoon and being bitten alive, this trip will forever be cherished to me and each girl will be remembered far into the future.Show more

  Gema is the absolute best! She's super organised, and made everyone feel welcome and at ease from minute one, and even before checking that we arrived safely the day before. She was always available and answered all questions with a friendly face and never with delay. She very quickly became more of a friend than a tour guide and has helped me with my Spanish a lot when she really just didn't need to. Her recommendations across the tour have been incredible and really added to the trip. She also has made great connections with drivers and locals across which just shows what a kind and great person she is. I could not recommend Gema enough as a tour guide (and simply great human!)Show more

  Gema was an amazing tour guide! She was super energetic and outgoing and always had a fun itinerary planned for us! She showed us around in Costa Rica and was really knowledgeable of the places and animals we got to see! She always chose delicious spots for food and always made sure we all had fun! Additionally I felt really safe and comfortable throughout the entire trip. She really made this a very memorable trip and we all became one big family in the end. This was a very unique experience and I would definitely go on another adventure with her!Show more
