    Asked on January 2nd, 2026

I'm going to be 65 in April. Will this tour not allow me to go?

    Age Range
    • The Dragon TripOperatorWritten January 2026

This trip is very physically demanding as it involves a lot of trekking. If you have a good level of fitness, don't mind camping or hostels and can walk in high altitudes for 4 days, we might consider you for this trip. We also have the age range in place to set the overall group dynamic. The guests that join this trip will expect to be with a younger age demographic.

    • D

      Dawn

      TravelerWritten January 2026

Im physically fit, however, high altitudes do present challenges in terms of running out of breath quickly and needing to stop frequently. Last summer, I went to Quito, Ecuador and going up the Teleferico and walking on the top was challenging. You mentioned 4 days of trekking, how high is the elevation? Also, I've stayed in hostels before but will I be able to have suitcase with me?

    • The Dragon TripOperatorWritten January 2026

You'll be reaching heights from 2,400 to 4,000 meters on some days and the majority of towns and cities we visit during the trip are at altitude.

I am interested in visiting Bolivia, Peru and Colombia taking my time over 3 months if possible in July, August, September. I will be 63 years old in 2026 and will be pre-retired. I speak Spanish and am interested in sharing with locals, history, literature, painting and nature. I am more interested in homestay accommodation than hotels. I would like to know if you can adapt a specific circuit for me with the necessary time (3 months) and propose a quote.

    • The Dragon TripOperatorWritten December 2025

All of our trips are guided in English. While it sounds like you've got an incredible trip planned, we wouldn't be able to help create a 3 month trip for you. This trip is set as a 21-day trip and can only be adjusted to a private tour for a minimum group size of 4 people. We could potentially accommodate you on the 21-day trip as a group trip if this is something you're interested in.

While we have the recommended age range in place, we can sometimes be flexible with this provided you complete our tour suitability form. The form is intended to help you understand the type of trip you'll be joining and to help us understand if we think you'll be a good fit for the trip. Could you confirm your date of birth for the 2 of you too?

    • The Dragon TripOperatorWritten December 2025

Just to make you aware, this trip uses multi-bed shared dorms as the standard accommodation with the option to upgrade to a private room within the hostels. And during the Inca Trail you will be camping for 3 nights. For the Inca Trail and Rainbow Mount trek, you should have a good level of fitness. You'll also be at an altitude of over 4,000 meters on the Inca Trail.

Do Colombia, Peru, Bolivia and Chile require visa for US citizens? If yes, do I still have enough time to obtain them for the December trip?

    • The Dragon TripOperatorWritten November 2025

Visa Information for U.S. Citizens: No visa required for Colombia, Peru, Chile. Visa required for Bolivia (approx. US $160). Visas can often be obtained at a Bolivian consulate, at some land borders, or upon arrival at certain airports. Processing typically takes 5–10 business days.

      Megan

      TravelerWritten November 2025

Just found out a real problem: mountain sickness. I had prior experiences of mountain sickness at altitude above 3500m. I checked the altitude of Machu Picchu, ~2500m, thought no issue. But I was alerted that the passes along the Inca Trail may be higher. Just asked AI, got the answer of >4000m. Even though I hiked a steep mountain climbing 1800m in one day a few months ago, that mountain is lower than 2000m. I doubt I can do the same at >3500m. I better choose to visit by train, unfortunately.

    • The Dragon TripOperatorWritten November 2025

Machu Picchu is actually at a lower altitude than Cusco, which sits at approximately 3,400m. If you're comfortable with these elevations, you can join the tour with an alternative train option. One possibility is to take it easy in Cusco on a free day to acclimate to the altitude, and then join a shorter Machu Picchu tour separately.

Wondering about the Trekking Alternatives section mentioned in the itinerary. What about info non trekking variant to these days?

    Tour Details
    • The Dragon TripOperatorWritten November 2025

There is a non-trekking alternative to our 4-day Andean hike portion of the tour. You can either request this if you don't want to partake in the trek expedition, or we'll default to this variation of the trekking days in the event that permits for both the Inca Trail and the Salkantay Trek are unsecurable. In this iteration of our tour, you'll spend an additional 2 nights in Cusco, followed by a 2-day, 1-night Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu tour. If you're not a fan of tents – this means no camping! On Day 10, we'll also swap the hostel for a hotel the night before you visit Machu Picchu and Sacred Valley.

    • The Dragon TripOperatorWritten August 2025

Our 4-day, 3-night Machu Picchu trek follows the Inca Trail. However, Inca Trail permits are incredibly limited and will typically sell out around 4-6 months in advance of the date. Our first option will always be to secure these permits – however, if these are unavailable, we will work to secure permits for the Salkantay Trek, which is an alternative route to Machu Picchu lasting the same length of time – just following a different route.

Unfortunately, we do not have any departure dates available for this tour in June-July-August. The earliest date available is for our 14-day Colombia to Peru Tour, departing 05-September to 19-September 2025. Would this work for you?

Unfortunately, I don't think this tour would be suitable. It is a youth focused tour with 15,000-20,000 steps per day, staying in hostels and includes some hikes and areas with limited accessibility.

Unfortunately I'm a pain and need to do the trip in May this year (a months time) and be back in New Zealand for June which is super short notice i know. Looks like you're booked up this year though?

    • The Dragon TripOperatorWritten April 2025

I'm really sorry, but I'm afraid our earliest departure date for this trip is the 23rd November 2025. We have departure dates for May 2025 in other destinations if you can be flexible with where you'd like to go?
