The communication from Avalon prior to the cruise was abysmal. Not until we arrived did we learn about our having to be bussed around for half of the trip. Cruising on the river isn't even close to interchangeable with your nicest coach. We were led to believe, from a September 18th letter, that some of the cruise would need to be on a smaller local siteseeing boat to get to Vienna, then the cruise would resume normally. The compensation from your company was a mere 100 euros of ships credit. This minor amount appeared to support our understanding that the interruption to our voyage would be insignificant, and had that expectation been close to reality, this would be a very different review. At our initial briefing in Prague, we learned that it was a full two weeks before that the itinerary was being changed to 3 ships, and two of them were floating hotels which we had to check in and out of with bus transfers between them. It is my sincere belief that this information was being intentionally withheld from us until after the cruise check-in to keep us from changing our plans. We would likely have changed, or postponed our trip to a time when the river levels were in better shape. I was watching the recent reviews of this cruise on various platforms to see if there was any further information. They seemed ambiguous or even positive. While we understand that the water is at record low levels this year and that is a natural phenomenon beyond Avalon's control, we trusted Avalon, as the professionals operating in this area, to keep us apprised of the situation. The exact opposite has occurred. The communication through the app is also terribly lacking. If we had known about the three ships, we would likely not have prepaid the tips but rather handed tips to individuals. Dividing tips among 120 staff versus 40 staff means they get very little.Show more

Loved that the menu each day included local flavor and the options for tours gave good selection. We were younger than most of the other passengers, and our two teenagers/young adults were two of six total on board, but they had a great time…tried new food, enjoyed the hiking options, and made use of the on-ship bicycles. Memories we will treasure for a lifetime!Show more
