- Day 1
San Francisco
You'll arrive in San Francisco and get settled at your hotel in the city center. The rest of the day is yours to spend however you like, or if you're interested, there are optional activities available like taking a harbor tour out to Alcatraz or catching a ferry over to Sausalito.

- Day 2
San Francisco to Sonora
Start by riding the cable cars around the city and walk through different neighborhoods to see Fisherman's Wharf, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Pier 39. Later in the afternoon, you'll head across the Golden Gate Bridge toward Sonora, a historic gold mining town that sits in California's wine country near the Sierra Nevada foothills.

- Day 3
Sonora - Calaveras Big Tree State Park - Columbia
This morning you'll head to Calaveras Big Tree State Park to see the giant sequoia trees and do some leisurely hiking through the forest. After that, you'll check out Columbia State Park, which is a restored ghost town from the Gold Rush period. The region around here has vineyards and old historic villages scattered throughout.

Sonora to Yosemite National Park
Drive to Glacier Point in Yosemite to get incredible views of Half Dome and Yosemite Valley stretching out below. Since large buses can't get up there, you'll have hiking options ranging from shorter easier routes along the valley edge to longer trails with panoramic views. Late afternoon and sunset are particularly good times to stick around for photography and to watch for deer, coyotes, and possibly black bears.

Yosemite to Mammoth Lakes
You'll cross over Tioga Pass and drive through the Sierra Nevada mountain ridge, hitting elevations around 10,000 feet. Along the way, you'll pass through the high Tuolumne Valley, then explore Mono Lake with its strange white limestone formations jutting out of the water. Later you'll settle into Mammoth Lakes, a popular ski resort town.

Mammoth Lakes to Las Vegas
Drive through Owen's Valley to reach Death Valley National Park, where conditions are extreme and temperatures vary greatly from other areas you've visited. Walk around the golden sand dunes, check out Badwater and its mineral springs, and see the dramatic rock formations at Zabriskie Point. Optional badlands hiking is available if temperatures cooperate. Then head toward Las Vegas for the evening and see the famous casino hotels like Bellagio, The Venetian, and Caesars Palace.

- Day 7
Las Vegas to Grand Canyon National Park
Follow Route 66 toward Arizona and Grand Canyon National Park. If timing allows, you'll catch the sunset from the rim. The canyon itself is roughly 277 miles long and about 10 miles across from rim to rim.

Grand Canyon National Park
Spend the day at the Grand Canyon rim, which is ideal for photography. Walk the easier trail out to Hermit's Rest viewpoint on the West Rim. If you want something different, there are optional helicopter tours and an IMAX theater showing canyon films.

Grand Canyon to Monument Valley to Lake Powell
Drive to Monument Valley to see the massive red rock towers rising from the desert floor, and you'll probably recognize some formations from old Western movies. A jeep tour takes you around to see the valley's different areas and get good photo shots. By afternoon, you'll head toward Lake Powell.

- Day 10
Lake Powell
This entire day is for exploring Lake Powell, which was created by damming the Colorado River. The lake runs for about 186 miles with dark blue water reflecting off red sandstone cliffs. You can explore on your own or take optional jeep tours to slot canyons, raft on the Colorado River, go on sunset boat tours, or swim at the beaches. Later you'll drive to Bryce Canyon National Park.

Bryce Canyon National Park
Check out Bryce Canyon, often called the most beautiful national park in the country. It's not a traditional canyon but rather natural curved formations that create a big amphitheater effect. Hike the trails winding through red, pink, and brown limestone towers and pillars that change color in different light. In the afternoon, continue on to Zion National Park.

Zion National Park
Spend all day in Zion National Park where the Virgin River has carved out a deep gorge through red sandstone. You'll do a 2 to 3 hour group hike out to Emerald Pools, where waterfalls drop into peaceful pools surrounded by green trees. Alternatively, you can hike Angel's Landing or wade through the Narrows if those appeal to you more.
