Bad Aussee
You'll arrive in Bad Aussee and collect your travel documents at the hotel. This spa town has plenty to see if you want to walk around and check out the local area, which drew artists during the salt production period. If there's time, you can follow one of the marked artist trails where easels are positioned along the way, giving you views of the surrounding countryside.

Bad Aussee
Starting along the Kainischtraun River in Styria, you'll walk through forest paths past Vogel Hut and across open meadows to reach Ödensee, a natural lake. The Tauplitzalm and Grimming Mountains provide nice views, and there are spots to swim and rest. You'll stop at Kohlröserhlhütte inn for Mayer's pesto with pastries, then move on to the karst springs at Strumern in a forested setting, finishing with a descent through Steinitzenalm and Almgraben.

- Day 3
Bad Mitterndorf
You'll head to Bad Mitterndorf, a spa town on a broad, sunny plateau. The spa gardens have a graduation tower where you can inhale salt water outdoors. After that, you can choose your activities: relax at Grimmingtherme thermal baths, try canoe trips on the Salza reservoir, or take cycling, mountain biking, and hiking tours around the area.

Tauplitzalm
Traveling to the foothills of the Totes Gebirge mountain range, you'll reach a high alpine plateau. On the way, you'll pass the Kulm ski jump, one of the world's four largest. The Salzkammergut BergeSeen Trail crosses the 'Almbalkon' (pasture balcony) before reaching Tauplitzalm with its six lakes among larch trees. You can ascend by chairlift (weather permitting), bus, or the rustic Trawenghütte, where alpine food and pastries are available.

Tauplitzalm
This day takes place at 1,600 meters altitude with many hiking trails for different skill levels. Rustic mountain and alpine huts between Lawinenstein and Schwarzensee offer places to stop and rest. The classic 6-Lakes Hike provides great views, and during the right season, wildflowers cover the pasture in colors like royal blue gentian, red alpine rose, and various orchid and lily species.

Grundlsee
You'll descend from Tauplitzalm to Grundlsee through changing landscapes, starting at the Totes Gebirge (Europe's largest karst plateau with no natural water). The route goes through less traveled terrain via Ödernalm and Rechenplatz, passing three lakes on the Hochalm and crossing the Ödertörl saddle. Following the Salza River through scenic valleys leads to Grundlsee, where you can swim after the long hike and watch sailors and surfers on this popular lake.

Grundlsee
After breakfast overlooking the lake, you'll have a relaxed day with choices to make. Try the 'Durch-Atmen' circular trail connecting Grundlsee and Toplitz lakes to explore the landscape. Or you can take a Platte (raft boat) across Lake Toplitzsee to secluded Lake Kammersee and visit where the Traun River starts. Renting a bike lets you explore Altaussee with its reflected rock faces, distinctive wooden houses, and views of the Dachstein Glacier.

Public transport brings you back to Bad Aussee, where the trip started (bus fares paid locally). If you're staying longer, you can visit the 'Mountain of Treasures in Rock Salt' show mine or the Alpine Garden with around 2,000 species of alpine and rare plants from around the world, with themed sections for medicinal plants and aromatic herbs.
