All of our trips are based on twin-share accommodation. However, if you prefer a private (single) room, we can certainly help check availability for a single supplement at an additional cost.

Are you able to get a twin room with bathroom on this tour

Our accommodation on this tour is twin-share, but the rooms are multi-share hostel dorms with shared bathrooms. A private room (with shared bathroom) can be booked, but it depends on availability. Single travellers get a single room. Couples get a double room. There are only a few private rooms per departure.

How much is single supplement for 9 day NZ South Island Express

A private room supplement (with shared bathroom facilities) is available at an additional cost of $1,505, if you'd prefer not to share a room on this trip.

Is it possible to get a full refund if my plans change or I want to change the dates?

Deposit is non-refundable once paid. If cancellations or changes made outside of final payment (3 months prior to departure) we can hold your deposit as a future travel credit with no expiration. Any changes or cancellations made after final payment will result in fees. The closer we are to departure the more fees are charged.

What is the cost for a single private room?

A private room supplement (with shared bathroom facilities) is available if you'd prefer not to share a room on this trip. The private room supplement applies to all nights of your trip and is subject to availability. The cost would be $1,135.

I wanted to enquire about the departure time and location for the meet up for the trip running on the 18-Nov. Why is there a $100 difference between the 13-Nov and 18-Nov trip? The 13-Nov trip is showing "Guaranteed departure" while 18-Nov trip is showing "Departure on request". Can I confirm if this is still running or is this awaiting numbers of attendees?

The welcome meeting will be at 6 pm on Day 01 of the tour. Our trip prices are subject to variable and seasonal pricing, both of which are standard practice within the travel industry. This means our trip prices may vary at any time in accordance with demand, market conditions and availability. It is likely that different passengers on the same trip have been charged different prices.

Are you sure? Cause there was a departure in august...

Our apologies, you can combined our New Zealand's North & South Island Adventure starting 08AUG2026 - 18AUG2026 with our New Zealand South Island Express starting 18AUG2026 - 26AUG2026. The first trip ends in Christchurch the morning of the 18th and the second trip starts with a welcome meeting at 6pm that day. You would just need to check out and then back in as they both will be at the same accommodation Haka House Christchurch.

I see that there is an esim through the app with this tour. When does it become active and when does it cut off?

Intrepid does not offer esim services for this trip and passengers will have to arrange one from their end.

Will you include Mitford Sound? I didnot find it in the brochure. If I would like to include one-day Mitford Sound? How much additional payment will be?

Yes you can book it as an optional activity on Day 4 in Queenstown. The option available is the Milford Sound Coach–Cruise–Coach Day Trip, priced at NZD 274 per person. This has to be booked on ground with the help of the tour leader.

Do you have any ferry rides or train rides in south island express trip? Do private vehicles have toilets for long distance trips? How do you provide lunch and dinner? Which restaurants do you have? May I know the names of hotels we are going to stay?

For this trip all transportation is done via private vehicle no ferries or trains. The vehicle does not have a bathroom onboard but for longer travel days there will be stops included where everyone can use the restroom. Only breakfast is included all other meals you will need to buy yourself. We do stay very centrally located and the leader is able to make great suggestions. As for accommodations we use multi-share hostels with shared facilities.

Due to an Admin error I could not join my tour at the departure point. Although my records were missing I did get the opportunity to join the tour a few days in. It was an OK tour. I really enjoyed some of the places visited, accommodation was OK. And most people on the tour were lovely. Of course there is always one person who makes it difficult for others and this tour made it easy to ignore them most of the time.Show more

Great scenery, length and size of tour is good. More time made for lunch would be good while travelling long distance i.e. cardrona hotel, picnic lunches organised for some activities etc. More structure, information and correct pricing required around the activities. The tour guide was informative enough, respectful and polite. However, he was 2 hours late arriving for the tour with apologies, excuses and blaming Hakka tours and the flights. Then he had to pick up his skate board at another hotel. We did not receive our tour around Christchurch as we were behind time. Breakfast could be better prepared and catered for. Would have been insightful to inform everyone about Lake Tekapo designated night sky project. Queenstown -visits to wineries for wine tasting was not offered even when requested by guests and horse riding was not an option. Dinner time was not as advertised. Everything was closing or could not accommodate a large group and when they could many items on the menu were not available. We did not visit Arrowtown as advertised. Wanaka is beautiful however the accommodation was overcrowded (8 in a room) with inadequate bathroom facilities. A bathroom was opened but it was filthy (I was the first one to have a shower and picked up two wads of hair near the drain). Our room was flooded by the water from the shower and peoples bags got wet. The tour to Mou Waho Island was disappointing and overpriced. We were told a large Catamaran would cruise us to the island. What we got was a water taxi with no access to outside and limited viewing. The driver said he was instructed to hurry by our tour leader as we had to be back in time. We arrived back in time but then waited on the street for 2 hours for the rest of the group who were late back from their activity. No body took responsibility. Franz Josef accommodation was great. The green stone carving and the hosts were excellent. The Kayacking was another great activity with lovely guides. The TranzAlpine train was also good. I organised additional accommodation in Christchurch at Urbanz an additional night only to be told I have to be out of the room by 10am and come back for check in after 2pm. What was the point of booking extra accommodation when I wanted the extra to be able to relax before moving onto the next phase of my trip. Please note…people from other countries do not want to be told about their country from someone who has only been a visitor. Tour guides need to be careful how they talk about other cultures. All cultures need to be respected not just Māori. Overall with pricing discrepancy, tour guides blaming each other, price discrepancy for activities, inadequate accommodation, being told I have to leave the accommodation by 10 am and not checkin until 2pm when staying for two nights, being billed twice for pre and post accommodation. I paid $270AU for pre and post accommodation. Then get billed again by Hakka and $250NZD is deducted from the bill of activities. $250NZD is $228AUD. I have not received the correct deduction, invoices or receipts. The list of disappointment continues. This was a disappointing, overpriced and confusing tour that I will not be recommending to others.Show more

  Not trying to be difficult… but uhhh, An extra $ 2300 for hotels? It's 250 a night extra ?That's a bit to wrap our heads around especially when original accommodation is already provided? ? Other more cost effective stays as options ? Can we just book our own stays ? Thanks Tim

  Yes, you're absolutely welcome to book your own accommodation if you prefer. Many travellers choose to do this for flexibility or budget reasons. The only requirement is that you make your way to the designated tour starting hotel on time on Day 1, and likewise be able to reach the ending point hotel at the conclusion of the tour.

- Unfortunately we cannot offer you a visa application service. Whether you need a visa or not depends on your nationality and where you wish to travel. Assuming your home country does not have a visa agreement with the country you're planning to visit, you will need to apply for a visa in advance of your scheduled departure.
- Here is an indication for which countries you might need a visa. Please contact the local embassy for help applying for visas to these places.
Payment information
- For any tour departing before May 14th, 2026 a full payment is necessary. For tours departing after May 14th, 2026, a minimum payment of $400 is required to confirm your booking with Intrepid Travel. The final payment will be automatically charged to your credit card on the designated due date. The final payment of the remaining balance is required at least 60 days prior to the departure date of your tour. TourRadar never charges you a booking fee and will charge you in the stated currency.
- Some departure dates and prices may vary and Intrepid Travel will contact you with any discrepancies before your booking is confirmed.
- The following cards are accepted for "Intrepid Travel" tours: Visa, Maestro, Mastercard, American Express or PayPal. TourRadar does NOT charge you an extra fee for using any of these payment methods.
Cancellation Policy
- Your money is safe with TourRadar, as we only pay the tour operator after your tour has departed.
- TourRadar is an authorized Agent of Intrepid Travel. Please familiarize yourself with the Intrepid Travel payment, cancellation and refund conditions.
Accessibility
