  1. Day 1

    Hobart to Strahan

Your Tasmanian adventure kicks off from Hobart heading west through three national parks in succession. You'll start by seeing Russell Falls and some of the world's tallest trees at Mount Field, then continue to Lake St Clair, which happens to be Australia's deepest freshwater lake. From there, the drive takes you through Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park where mountains, buttongrass plains, and rainforests create quite a landscape. Before reaching Strahan for the night, you'll stop in Queenstown to learn about Tasmania's pioneer history.

  2. Day 2

    Strahan

The West Coast gives you options for how to spend your time. If you're up for something active, there's a guided walk through temperate rainforest and the chance to explore Henty Sand Dunes. Prefer a slower pace instead? The Gordon River Cruise takes you through Macquarie Harbour to Sarah Island and into the World Heritage Area where you can see ancient Huon pines. Either way, later in the day you'll head to Ocean Beach, Tasmania's longest stretch of sand, for some fresh air and time on the windswept shore.

Cradle Mountain National Park sits in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area and that's where your day focuses. Early on, head to Ronny Creek to look for wombats, then choose from several walking options depending on what appeals to you. There's Marion's Lookout summit if you want elevation, or the Dove Lake Circuit if you prefer a different route through the alpine environment. After your mountain time, you'll travel to Sheffield, known as the Town of Murals, and then continue south to Launceston, one of Australia's oldest cities.

    Launceston to Bicheno

Start with a short walk through Launceston's Cataract Gorge nature reserve where wallabies sometimes appear. Then it's a drive east to the coast, stopping for lunch in St Helens along the way. The afternoon takes you to Tasmania's best beaches, including Bay of Fires/Larapuna with its turquoise water and significant cultural meaning to Tasmanian aboriginal people and palawa. After spending time on those beaches, you'll settle into Bicheno for the night, a relaxed township known for its little penguins.

Five days is a challenging amount of time to explore Tasmania, and we were glad our tour was filled with interesting people, making the long drive enjoyable. However, if time is limited, I recommend focusing on the east coast and Cradle Mountain. The western half of the journey is quite long, and overall the experience isn't as great.

There are no meals included in the tour however knowing that information is helpful as it makes our guide aware and they can help the passenger with options. We have passengers with this dietary requirement all of the time on our tours. The maximum spent in the bus would be approximately 5.5 hours each day however this is broken down with regular stops. The motels we are currently staying at on our Famous 5 Tour are: Motel Strahan - 2 nights, Olde Tudor Hotel - 1 night, Beachfront Bicheno - 1 night. In regards to hikes, we offer different levels of walks where possible to suit everyone's needs. As long as you are comfortable doing a bit of walking you will be fine.
