    Oban to Portree

From Fort William, board the Jacobite Steam Train heading to Mallaig (summer route until October 20, 2025). The train crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct, the famous bridge from Harry Potter films, with sweeping views of Loch Shiel along the way. Once in Mallaig, take the ferry across to Skye, then drive to Portree for the night. Winter route (October 27-March 30, 2026) takes you by car through the Highlands instead, passing Glenfinnan Viaduct, Eilean Donan Castle, and the Skye Bridge before reaching Portree.

You'll start your day on Loch Ness, keeping an eye out for any sign of Nessie during the cruise. The boat ride gives you time to take in the water and surrounding landscape before heading north to Beauly Priory. These historic ruins are particularly recognizable if you've watched Outlander, and they're worth a good look around. After grabbing lunch, you'll make your way to Culloden Battlefield, where you can walk the grounds and get a sense of the 1746 battle. Later in the afternoon, you'll visit Clava Cairns to see the standing stones and chambered cairns up close. The mysterious atmosphere of these ancient structures makes for a fitting end to the day.

  5. Day 5

    Inverness to Edinburgh

This morning begins at the Highland Folk Museum, where you'll get a real picture of how Highland people lived in centuries past. From there, you'll head to a local whisky distillery to learn about the production process and what makes the 'water of life' so central to Scottish culture. You'll have time to taste and learn before moving on to Dunkeld. This quiet village sits nicely along the River Tay, and you can walk around and visit the cathedral, which has its own historical significance. The day wraps up with the drive back to Edinburgh in the evening, giving you time to reflect on what you've seen.

Our tour guide was nice, friendly and helpful, but perhaps a bit out of his depth? I know the “way too fast” schedule was probably not within his planning. But to have only 30 minutes at the stop for the Kelpies -when it took 15 minutes to get to and from the sculptures -gave us not one minute to simply gaze at them. Just snap a picture and we’re off. Bummer. And to advertise the Isle of Skye as a part of the tour when we didn’t get to see a single Skye highlight was rather a misnomer. We’re glad we got to see what we did, but we’re constantly too rushed and left disappointed.

What a fantastic 5 days tour we had visiting the Scottish Highlands, the Isle of Skye and Loch Ness. The weather was amazing as was the scenery and activities on this tour. The tour was well paced with loads of stops along the way and arriving at our overnight stops with plenty of time to get something to eat. The accommodation was exceptional and breakfasts were very good with lots of choices. We enjoyed the extra activities such as the 'Harry Potter' steam train ride over the Glenfinnan Viaduct to Mallaig and the cruise on Loch Ness. Our guide, Cliff was exceptional. A great story teller, with interesting antidotes about people and places of the area we were travelling through. He was very knowledgeable about Scottish history and his love for the outdoors meant he was keen to show us extra gems along the way. We would definitely recommend this tour. It was amazing!

    Asked on November 28th, 2025

I am looking at the Oct 19th 2026 tour date but curious about the dates not aligning with the train. It has a gap between the Summer and Winter tour dates. Will the itinerary still be the same? (Will we still take the Jacobite Steam Train Fort William to Mallaig?)

    Tour Details
    • Highland Explorer ToursOperatorWritten November 2025

For the 5-day tour departing Monday 19th October, the Jacobite Steam Train will still be running on this tour. This will be the last 5-day tour with the train, so if you did decide to book a later date, the itinerary would change to not include this.
