Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Lima

    You'll land at Jorge Chávez International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Miraflores. This evening arrival gives you time to settle in and get some rest before your week kicks off. If you're interested, there's an option to book a Lima cooking class for tomorrow morning, so keep that in mind when you're getting oriented to the city.

  2. Day 2

    Lima to Cusco to Urubamba

    Head out early for your flight to Cusco, then drive through the Sacred Valley toward Urubamba. You'll stop at the salt pans of Maras first, where locals have been extracting salt in the same way for centuries. After that, check out Moray, an Inca site that researchers believe functioned as an agricultural testing ground. By evening, you'll have a traditional meal cooked in a pachamanca, which is an underground stone oven that creates some really distinctive flavors.

  3. Day 3

    Sacred Valley

    This morning takes you to Parque de la Papa, a rural community that preserves hundreds of local potato varieties. Your guide will walk you through the fields and explain how they grow and cultivate these crops, plus you'll see traditional weaving techniques. Later, you'll see the Inca ruins at both Ollantaytambo and Pisac. Lunch happens at Parwa Community Restaurant in Huchuy Qosqo, which supports the local community directly.

  4. Day 4

    Urubamba to Machu Picchu (Aguas Calientes)

    Travel from Urubamba to Ollantaytambo, then board a scenic train heading toward Aguas Calientes near Machu Picchu. If you're serious about archaeology, there's a 1-day Inca Trail option available that covers about 11 kilometers and takes around 5 to 6 hours, passing sites like Wiñay Wayna and Inti Pata before you reach the Sun Gate for your first views of Machu Picchu. Otherwise, you can visit the hot springs nearby to unwind.

    Machu Picchu to Cusco

    Get a guided tour of Machu Picchu, the 15th-century Inca citadel and UNESCO World Heritage site. You'll walk through the temples and terraces, then catch the train back to Cusco later that day.

  6. Day 6

    Cusco

    You'll spend your day in Cusco. Visit the planetarium to learn about the night sky and how the Inca understood astronomy. There's also a cooking class option if you book ahead—it typically starts with a pickup around 12:30 from your hotel, includes a visit to the local market and restaurant, and wraps up around 16:00.

    Fly out early from Cusco to Lima, then connect onward to Iquitos, the jungle port town where the Amazon, Nanay, and Itaya Rivers meet. After you arrive, take an orientation walk through town, then grab lunch on the main square at a restaurant in one of the historic buildings.

  8. Day 8

    Amazon Riverboat

    You'll board the Amatista Riverboat and spend the day relaxing while taking in the rainforest from the deck. Watch for grey and pink dolphins in the water. Naturalist guides lead excursions by skiff and on foot through smaller tributaries, point out birds and marine species, and give talks about what you're seeing.

    Pacaya Samiria National Reserve

    Rise early for a full day exploring Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Start with birdwatching in search of parrots, herons, kingfishers, hummingbirds, and scarlet macaws. Then head out by boat to look for sloths and monkeys in the trees, plus piranhas and pink dolphins in the waterways. In the afternoon, walk through the jungle to visit a local indigenous community and learn about their traditions and daily life shaped by the river.

    Take an early morning boat out for one more river excursion, watching for wildlife along the Amazon and its tributaries. Before you head to the airport, stop by the Amazonian Manatee Rescue Center in Iquitos to see these animals up close and learn about their rehabilitation.

    This trip was very expensive given the quality and quantity of included meals and the accommodations in a few of the hotels. We would not book through National Geographic G Adventures in the future.
