Good day, Sue Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your experience on our 6 day Garden Route & Addo group adventure tour. We are truly sorry to hear that aspects of the tour did not meet your expectations. As a small, owner run company offering a very personal service, this is very disappointing for the whole team to read, and we truly take every review, good or bad, to heart. The storms and rainfall experienced during your trip were some of the most severe we have encountered since Earthstompers began operating in 2005, and whilst your group was able to visit all the destinations on our tour itinerary, we understand that the conditions were far from ideal and that attractions like the suspension bridge at Tsitsikamma was not accessable, for visitors' safety. We're sorry that the weather negatively impacted your trip. Like the guests on tour, we are also disappointed when the weather doesn’t cooperate, as our main goal is always to create happy, memorable experiences. Unfortunately, difficult weather can really put a damper on things. Regarding the itinerary, our Garden Route tours are designed as balanced small group experiences that showcase a wide variety of South Africa’s landscapes, towns, highlights, and adventures, with the Addo safari experience included as one component of the journey. We wish time and budget were never a factor, as you could easily spend much longer exploring the Garden Route region in depth. However, over the past 20 years of operating these tours, we’ve learned that many guests have limited travel time, and that 6 days is generally the maximum amount of time most group tour guests have available for this region. Our scheduled group tours are therefore designed to showcase many highlights and regions within a relatively short period of time. At the same time, we understand that not all travellers are the same, and some guests do prefer a slower pace or longer stays in certain areas. We always aim to be as transparent as possible and provide guests with detailed information before booking. For example, we clearly outline the driving distances and daily itinerary breakdowns on our website. For guests looking for a more wildlife-focused or experience or more leisure time in destinations, we recommend one of our dedicated safari packages, safari extensions, or private tours. These options allow for greater itinerary flexibility and a slower pace. Many of our group tour guests book a safari extension after their Garden Route experience, where we create a safari-based package for them following their Garden Route experience. Regarding lunch stops. We appreciate your feedback regarding the lunch stops and are sorry that the style of lunches did not fully match your preference for more on-the-go meals. This can sometimes be a difficult balance to maintain. We always try to accommodate different travel styles, as some guests prefer quick, on-the-go lunches, while others enjoy slowing down and experiencing fresh local food at lunch stops along the route. Many guests see these meal stops as an important part of the overall travel experience. We agree that every day does not require a sit-down lunch stop. Our guides usually offer a combination of sit-down and on-the-go meals as some days are more relaxed than others. It's tricky, to cater for every individual's needs on a group tour with multiple individuals/couples from all over the world. We are very sorry and disappointed to hear that your experience with Mark was not entirely positive, and we truly appreciate you taking the time to share this feedback with us. We never want any guest to feel unheard, uncomfortable, or frustrated during their travels, and we are sorry that parts of the experience left you feeling this way. While Mark is often highly praised for his knowledge, passion, and enthusiasm, we completely understand that his communication and guiding style did not align with your personal preferences on this occasion. It was also a particularly challenging week weather wise, which added extra pressure and stress for both guests and guides alike. Having personally guided hundreds of guests along the Garden Route myself, I understand how demanding it can be for a guide to drive safely in severe rain, while at the same time organising logistics, communicating with guests, and trying to keep everyone happy. The added pressure (like the difficult weather on this occasion) can sometimes become overwhelming. That said, this should never take away from the overall guest experience, and we do take your comments and feedback seriously. We will be discussing your feedback with Mark internally and using it as a constructive opportunity for reflection and growth. We genuinely appreciate your feedback, as it helps us continue refining our tours and communication so that guests can choose the experience best suited to their travel style and expectations. We do hope that despite the challenges, there were still moments of beauty and memorable experiences during your time exploring South Africa. We want all our guests to have the best possible time on our tours and it is very disappointing when we don't succeed. Your comments are noted and we will continue to discuss and find ways to improve. Best Regards, Hendrik Human-Owner

Hello, Eugene Thank you so much for this lovely review — we really appreciate you sharing your experience with us. We’re delighted to hear that you had such an excellent time and that Gareth made the journey even more special with his knowledge, storytelling, and safe driving. Feeling comfortable, informed, and well looked after is exactly what we want for our guests, so it’s great to know that came through. It also sounds like the group dynamic and shared adventures added to the fun — those connections often become one of the most memorable parts of a tour. We’ll be sure to pass your kudos on to Gareth; he’ll be thrilled to hear this. Thank you for recommending the tour and for celebrating everything that makes South Africa so special. Hi, Lana Thank you so much for taking the time to share such a thoughtful and generous review — it truly means the world to us. We’re thrilled to hear that this was one of the best organised tours you’ve experienced, and even more so that Gareth played such a big role in making it fulfilling and memorable. His passion for guiding, deep experience, and genuine care for his guests are exactly what we strive for at Earthstompers, and we’ll be sure to pass your kind words on to him. It’s wonderful to hear that the variety packed into the 6 days, the food, and especially the self-drive safari in Addo all lived up to expectations. Addo is always special, and having a guide who really knows the park makes all the difference. Thank you again for trusting us with your adventure. We’re honored to know it’s one you’ll always cherish, and we’d love to welcome you back for another journey one day. ????✨ Safe Travels, Cindy & the Earthstompers team

Is this suitable for oldies in their 60's!?

    Age Range
    • Earthstompers AdventuresOperatorWritten March 2026

Our tours can absolutely be suitable for guests in their 60s — however, it's important to note that this is an active tour, best suited to those who enjoy being on the move. Guests should be comfortable with regular walking, carrying their own luggage, and getting in and out of the vehicle multiple times throughout the day.

We typically welcome travellers between the ages of 18 and 65, and often have a lovely mix of guests ranging from backpackers to those preferring more comfortable guest house stays. As long as you are fit, healthy, and enjoy an active pace, we are confident you will have a great experience with us.

We do accept guests up to 65 on our group tours, and we're always happy to chat if you're a bit older but still feeling adventurous, we review these on a case-by-case basis.

If you feel that the pace of the group tour might be a bit too fast, we can also offer a private tour option at a more relaxed pace, allowing for greater flexibility and comfort while still enjoying the full experience.

If you're still unsure, we'd love to chat a bit more about your travel style and comfort level to make sure it's the perfect fit for you.

I am very interested in your tour, however I don't have any interest in going on the game/safari day. Is there any way to cut the tour short and get back to cape town a day early?

    • Earthstompers AdventuresOperatorWritten March 2026

      Option 1:
Join our 5 Day Garden Route Tour starts in Cape Town on a Monday and ends in Port Elizabeth on Friday afternoon, from here you can book a flight back to Cape Town however this will include the drive through Addo National Park.

      Option 2:
Join our 5 Day Garden Route Tour starts in Cape Town on a Monday and ends in Port Elizabeth. On Friday the group will have breakfast (own account) in Addo National Park before they head out on the included game drive. We can then assist in arranging a private transfer from Addo National Park to Port Elizabeth where you can book a flight back to Cape Town.

      Option 3:
Join our 6 day Garden Route & Addo group tour and while the rest of the group carries on to Addo National Park on day 4, you can spend another night in Sedgefield to explore the area, and the group can pick you up again on their way back towards Cape Town. Our weekly scheduled Garden Route & Addo group adventure tour starts on a Monday in Cape Town and travels via Hermanus to Cape Agulhas. You will stop in Betty's Bay to view a colony of endangered African penguins before heading to Hermanus. Although it is not whale season just yet, Hermanus is an absolutely lovely coastal town, known for its charm and beautiful beachfront restaurants — a perfect spot to enjoy a relaxed lunch by the sea. The town also boasts a number of art galleries, as well as local craft shops worth exploring. Overnight in Cape Agulhas. Day 2 we travel along Route 62 to Oudtshoorn, known as the Ostrich Capital of the World. Enjoy lunch and wine tasting at a local winery before checking into a working game farm. End the day with an ostrich farm tour set against the Outeniqua Mountains and Swartberg Mountains. On day 3 we head to Wilderness to explore Wilderness National Park by canoeing on a river and hiking through the forest to a beautiful waterfall. We spend the night in Sedgefield before heading, on day 4, to Tsitsikamma National Park. From Tsitsikamma our group continues on to the Addo region. At this point we can customize your specific experience in the following way: when the group carries on from Tsitsikamma to Addo-side, we can arrange a transfer for you from Tsitsikamma back to Sedgefield to stay a second night. You can enjoy the day at leisure on day 5 and explore the local area and maybe head to Knysna. The group tour will pass by and collect you around 4-5pm before heading to Wilderness where the tour stays overnight on day 5. On day 6 the tour travels from Wilderness via Mossel Bay and back to Cape Town.

This is an active tour and it is best suited towards those who like to be on the move, and can comfortably walk, carry luggage, get in and out of the vehicle frequently, etc. The group is a mix between backpackers and guest house clients, and ages can range from 18 to 65 however we do manage bookings on a case by case basis. The only requirement we would have is for you both of your to please complete our age clearance form confirming that you understand the nature of the tour. Once we receive the completed age clearance forms we will confirm your booking. We do not offer scuba diving on tour but bungee jumping and skydiving is an optional activity so you do not have to do these activities if you're not interested.

Is the sleeping quarters per night hostel oriented or do you get a separate room with your own bathroom?

    • Earthstompers AdventuresOperatorWritten January 2026

We offer 2 types of accommodation on our Garden Route Tours, backpackers have more of a social vibe and are better for clients looking for a bit of atmosphere. They usually have a bar or bonfire area. Although backpackers offer a budget price, the standard of backpackers in South Africa is generally high. Guesthouses are a more private, quieter, luxurious experience. Backpacker and guesthouse clients travel together in the same tour vehicle. On day 2 & 4 of the tour both backpackers and guesthouse clients overnight in the same location - a working game farm near Oudtshoorn (Day 2) and a working citrus farm near Addo (Day 4) For 2 people travelling together you can book the following: Backpacker Twin/Double Ensuite Guesthouse Twin/Double Both options is a private room with 1 double bed or 2 twin beds and its own bathroom.

Is there a place for him to run during the trip? Do you have any recommendations to stay in Capetown?

    • Earthstompers AdventuresOperatorWritten January 2026

The tour has a set itinerary and the group does so much in one day so I don't know if there would be time for Thomas to run but he can always check with the guide on tour. As for accommodation, we work with small accommodations on the Garden Route as well as Cape Town. For guesthouse accommodation we recommend, Parker Cottage and for Backpacker accommodation, Never@home.

      TravelerWritten January 2026

Or any hotel near downtown will be OK? There are a number of them and it will take some time to figure out and then I can give the one we chose so you can pick us up and drop us off at the end of the tour?

    • Earthstompers AdventuresOperatorWritten January 2026

ONOMO Hotel Waterfront falls within our pick up and drop off range so your guide would be able to collect you directly from your accommodation. If you find an alternative accommodation we can collect you from your accommodation as long as it falls within the pick up/drop off range below: Cape Town central (central business district), Camps Bay, Sea Point, Green Point, Observatory, Rondebosch.

How much for a single person in room supplement?

    Single supplement
    • Earthstompers AdventuresOperatorWritten January 2026

The cost for 1 person depends on the type of accommodation you are interested in. We offer back packer single ensuite rooms, or back packer dorm rooms. OR guest house accommodation.
Once you let us know which accommodation type you are interested in we can let you know the price.

please let me know the price for backpacker single ensuite room.
      and guesthouse single ensuite rooms.

Also during the trip how do we do for luggage such as suitcase etc. I mean usually i have a standard 23kg suitcase, a carry one case and a backpack with me. Do you have facilties to carry these around?
When in Japan we could arrange with the hotel to keep the suitcase until we return.

    • Earthstompers AdventuresOperatorWritten January 2026

RE: luggage, we usually travel with a trailer to accommodate the guests luggage. If you want to travel lighter on tour then it is also possible to ask your accommodation to keep the luggage safe for you until your return (that only works if the same accommodation is used for pre and post tour).

We have space for each passenger to have one suitcase and one "carry-on"-sized piece of luggage – a laptop bag, backpack, or similar. Suitcase size is limited to the dimension of 67 cm (26 in) by 45 cm (18 in), and carry on is limited to the dimension of 48 cm (19 in) by 32 cm (13 in). There are generally not porters or staff available to assist with luggage – your luggage should be of a size and weight you can comfortably manage yourself. Hard or soft suitcases are fine. If you have more or bigger luggage than this, please contact us in advance to make alternative arrangements, as our luggage trailers are specifically designed to fit one suitcase per person, not exceeding above dimensions.

Me and my friend, both women and 24 years old, are interested in this tour. Before possibly booking, we wanted to know if a group is already starting to build up for this particular tour ? And if so, we were also curious to know the average composition of the group in terms of age and gender of the participants !

I wanted to know if there are still two spots left for this tour, for the dates 19th to 24th of January 2026 ? I tried proceeding with the reservation and it says that only one space remains, but I didn't understand if that means enough for two people, or one spot enough for only one person?

    • Earthstompers AdventuresOperatorWritten January 2026

Unfortunately we only have 1 seat available on our tour departing on 19 January.

One question: day 5 states that no meals are supplied. Are there markets nearby? As it's a safari day, how is food obtained please?

    • Earthstompers AdventuresOperatorWritten November 2025

The group will be visiting Addo National Park on day 5 and they will have breakfast at a restaurant inside the park. The guide will stop somewhere to get something for lunch and for dinner the group usually also goes out to a restaurant. All meals on day 5 are for guests' own account.
