Itinerary
- Day 1
Moshi/Arusha to Shira Plateau
You'll start the day driving from Moshi or Arusha toward Londorossi Gate to complete registration. From there, the drive continues to Morum Barrier Gate where your trek actually begins. The trail takes you across moorland with Kilimanjaro's glaciers visible above, and it's a relatively easy introduction at just 4 km that takes between 1-2 hours. You'll reach Shira 1 Camp by early afternoon, giving you time to settle in and get used to the elevation around 3,500 meters (11,500 feet).

Shira Plateau
Today's a gentler day of hiking across the Shira Plateau, covering roughly 7 km over 3-4 hours. You'll notice the moorland plants changing as you go higher, and you get good views of Kibo Peak throughout the walk. The pace is intentionally slow here because your body needs time to adjust to the altitude. By evening you're at around 3,800 meters (12,500 feet), and the reduced activity helps with acclimatization before things get harder.

Shira Plateau to Barranco Valley
This day pushes a bit more with a total of 10 km over 6-8 hours of hiking. You'll gradually climb toward Lava Tower, which serves as your lunch break spot and helps your body continue adjusting to altitude. After eating, you descend into Barranco Valley where you'll see giant groundsels and dramatic cliff walls surrounding you. The valley's striking landscape makes the longer day feel worthwhile, and you'll reach camp feeling accomplished but ready for rest.

Barranco Valley to Karanga Camp
The Barranco Wall climb is steep and requires some scrambling, but it's shorter in distance at 5 km taking about 4-5 hours total. Once you get past the wall section, you'll cross through ridges and valleys heading toward Karanga Camp. The climbing uses your hands at times, so it feels more technical than previous days. By afternoon you're at Karanga settling in, having covered ground that feels rewarding despite the shorter mileage.

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
You'll trek 4 km up to Barafu Camp today, though the short distance is deceptive because it's steep and takes about 4-5 hours. This is your final camp before the summit attempt, sitting at around 4,700 meters (15,400 feet). From camp you can see Mawenzi Peak in the distance. The rest of your day is about pacing yourself, eating properly, and mentally preparing for the midnight start. Go to bed early so you get whatever sleep you can manage at this altitude.

Summit Push to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Mweka Camp
Midnight arrives and you start moving up the mountain in darkness with your headlamp lighting the way. The climb covers 16 km over 10-14 hours total, so this is your longest and most challenging day physically. You'll hike steadily toward Stella Point, and the real reward comes when sunrise breaks and you realize you've reached Uhuru Peak, the summit at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). After celebrating and taking photos, you descend back to Barafu for a brief rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp. It's exhausting but unforgettable.

Mweka Camp to Moshi/Arusha
Your final day takes you through lush rainforest with bird calls and dense vegetation all around, a complete change from the barren landscape you've been hiking through. The 10 km descent to the gate takes roughly 3-4 hours, and your legs will definitely feel it after days of climbing. At Mweka Gate you'll receive your official summit certificate, which is the perfect way to wrap up your achievement. From there it's a drive back to Moshi or Arusha where you can rest and reflect on what you've accomplished.
