Itinerary
- Day 1
Keflavik to Reykjavik
You'll land at Keflavik and get transferred to your accommodation in Reykjavik, which takes about 45 minutes. After settling in, you'll have the rest of your first night to relax and adjust to Iceland time.
- Day 2
Reykjavik to Snæfellsnes Peninsula
Starting north from Reykjavik, you'll check out historical sites and natural spots around Borgarnes. The medieval village of Reykholt and its Snorrastofa Medieval Museum come first, then you'll see Hraunfossar waterfall dropping over black lava. From there, you circle the Snaefellsnes peninsula to view Snaefellsjokull volcano and the basalt formations at Arnarstapi before reaching your accommodation on the peninsula's north side.

Snæfellsnes to Southern Westfjords
You'll circle Breidafjordur to see Erik the Red's house reconstruction at Eiriksstadir and the Leif Eriksson Center in Budardalur, which covers how Icelanders reached America centuries before Columbus. Then you drive through fjord landscapes along the Westfjords coast (or take the optional ferry past Flatey island), ending at Latrabjarg cliffs where Europe's western point sits. Millions of puffins and razorbills live there, making it great for wildlife and photography.

Southern Westfjords to Ísafjörður
You'll drive through the isolated Westfjords, crossing barren passes and multiple fjords heading north. Dynjandi waterfall, dropping 100 metres down a cliff, is a key stop. There's an option to visit the Melrakkasetur research center in Sudavik to learn about Arctic foxes. After taking in the fjord views, you'll reach the Isafjordur region for the night.

Ísafjörður to Hvammstangi
This is your longest driving day, heading south from Isafjordur along Isafjordur Bay to Holmavik, a small fishing village with traditional wooden houses. After that, you continue to Hvalfjordur, the longest fjord on the southwest coast with steep rock faces and high mountains. You'll finish the day in the Hvammstangi area.

Hvammstangi to Akureyri
You'll reach Skagafjordur valley, famous for horse breeding and one of Iceland's largest valleys at about 35 km long and 5 to 10 km wide. Glaumbaer farm is your stop, a peat-built farm with 12 buildings showing 18th and 19th-century furniture and daily life. Later, you head to Akureyri, the green capital of the north, sitting at the end of the 90 km-long Eyjafjordur.

Akureyri to Lake Mývatn
Northern Iceland's coast has diverse whale species, so you'll head to Husavik, the world's whale watching hub, where an optional tour is available. Next comes Godafoss waterfall, the waterfall of the gods, with turquoise water and strange basalt formations. You'll end in the Lake Myvatn area and stay there for two nights.

- Day 8
Myvatn
You'll spend the day around Lake Myvatn checking out the region's diverse geology and wildlife. Start by walking through the bubbling mud pots and looking at the strange lava formations scattered across the landscape. The area has pseudocraters too, which are worth seeing if you're interested in volcanic features. Birdwatchers will want to bring binoculars since about 115 species show up here, especially along the western shore of the lake. Head over to Dimmuborgir on the eastern side, where you can walk through a lava labyrinth with towers, walls, and caves to explore. If your legs need a break after all that walking, the Myvatn Nature Bath offers a chance to soak and warm up.

- Day 9
Lake Mývatn to Egilsstaðir
You cross the Tjornes Peninsula to Jokulsargljufur National Park with its massive horseshoe-shaped Asbirgi canyon, 3.5 km long and about 1 km wide. Then you get to Dettifoss waterfall where roughly 193 cubic metres of water thunders down each second. From there, you drive to Egilsstadir for the night.

Egilsstaðir to Höfn
You'll check out the East Fjords and their charming fishing villages along the coast with natural harbors. In Djupivogur, you stop at Langabud, a dark red warehouse from 1790 now housing a museum and cafe with harbor views where you can have Icelandic cake and espresso. There's an option to visit Petra's Stone Collection in Stoduvarfjordur if interested. Your overnight stop is in the Hofn area.

Skaftafell to Vik
You'll drive along Vatnajökull, which is Europe's largest glacier and quite something to see from the road. Stop at Skaftafell National Park where marked trails let you hike through different terrain and get closer views of the glacial landscape. There's an option to take a boat trip between the icebergs at Jökulsarlon glacier lagoon if you want that experience, though it's not required. The driving covers roughly 300 km total, and you'll spend the night in the Vik area after a full day on the road.

- Day 12
South Coast to Reykjavik
You'll drive the south coast with several stops along the way. First up is the Skogar Folk Museum, then you'll see Skogarfoss waterfall and continue to Seljalandsfoss. From there, the route heads to the Golden Circle where you can see the active hot spring at Geysir and the Gullfoss waterfall in action. Thingvellir historic site comes next, and here you can walk around and see how continental drift has actually shaped the landscape through visible fissures. The whole drive is about 300 km and you'll wrap up the day with a night in Reykjavik.
