Itinerary
- Day 1
Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave
Your trek starts at Umbwe Gate where the elevation sits at 1,600m. From there you'll make your way through dense rainforest on what's considered a challenging but shorter route. The day covers about 11km and you'll gain roughly 1,000m in elevation. By evening you'll reach Umbwe Cave Camp at 2,940m where you'll set up for the night.

Umbwe Cave to Barranco Camp
The path continues climbing through rainforest and transitions into moorland as you go higher. Terrain gets noticeably steeper today and you'll see the vegetation change pretty clearly with each step up. The trek covers 6km with another 1,000m elevation gain. You'll end the day at Barranco Camp positioned at 3,950m.

Landmarks Barranco Camp - Day 3
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Today you tackle the famous Barranco Wall, which is a challenging scramble that requires using your hands to pull yourself up in spots. Once you get past that, the ridge ahead offers nice views and breaks up the difficulty. From there it's a 5km trek with a more manageable 400m elevation gain. Karanga Camp at 4,035m becomes your camp for the night.

Landmarks Barranco Wall Karanga Camp - Day 4
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
This is a shorter day but the terrain gets steep as you approach Barafu Camp, your base for the summit attempt tomorrow. The landscape transforms into the alpine desert zone with barren, rocky ground all around. You'll trek 4km and climb 600m to reach Barafu Camp at 4,640m. Use this time to rest and prepare mentally for what comes next.

Landmarks Barafu Camp - Day 5
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
You'll start before dawn for the push to Uhuru Peak at 5,895m, the roof of Africa. This day will test your determination and physical endurance more than any other. The ascent is grueling but reaching the summit brings real reward. After celebrating at the peak, you descend the same day to Mweka Camp at 3,100m where you'll recover and rest.

- Day 6
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Your final descent takes you through lush rainforest again, and the scenery shift from alpine landscape back to green vegetation is striking. The trek covers 9km with 1,600m of elevation loss, which is easier on the body but can be tough on the knees. When you reach Mweka Gate, you'll get your certificate of achievement and have time to celebrate finishing the mountain.
