Itinerary

  1. Day 1

Moshi to Mount Kilimanjaro National Park

You'll start by driving from Moshi through Machame village on your way to Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. Once you arrive, the actual trekking begins as you head into the rainforest. The trail winds through lush vegetation with some sections that can get pretty muddy, so watch your footing. By the end of the day, you'll reach Machame Camp at 9,380ft where you'll set up for the night and get used to the altitude.

    Start point
    Kilimanjaro, Tanzania (Kilimanjaro airport , 07:00 - 08:00)
    Meals
    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Included Activities

    • Trek through rainforest to Machame Camp
    Landmarks
    Mount Kilimanjaro National Park
    Machame Camp
  2. Day 2

    Machame Camp to Shira Camp

After breakfast, you're leaving the rainforest behind and things get steeper. The rocky ridge ahead is covered with heather as you climb higher. You'll cross through a small valley and continue along the ridge, then head west toward a river gorge. The path levels out as you approach Shira Camp at 12,600ft. Once there, you can rest and recover from the morning's exertion.

    Shira Camp
  3. Day 3

    Shira Camp to Barranco Camp

Starting from Shira Plateau, you'll head east up a ridge with views of Kibo Peak. The trail takes you southeast toward Lava Tower, nicknamed the 'Shark's Tooth' for its distinctive shape at 15,100ft. From there, you continue to Arrow Glacier at 16,000ft before descending to Barranco Hut at 13,000ft. It might seem odd finishing at the same height you started, but this day actually helps your body acclimatize better despite the elevation change.

  4. Day 4

    Barranco Camp to Barafu Hut

You'll have breakfast and then tackle the steep Barranco Wall, a challenging ridge crossing that looks intimidating but is more about technique than difficulty. After crossing, you'll move through Karanga Valley and continue until you reach the junction with the Mweka Trail. From there, you ascend to Barafu Hut at 15,100ft, completing the South Circuit. You can see both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks from here. Spend the evening resting and eating well to prepare for tomorrow's summit attempt.

  5. Day 5

Barafu Hut to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

This is the big day and it starts incredibly early, somewhere between midnight and 2am when you depart Barafu. You'll ascend through heavy scree between Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers on the most physically demanding part of the entire trek. Reaching Stella Point at 18,600ft means you'll catch the sunrise, which is a reward for the tough climbing. After a short rest, you push on to Uhuru Peak, Kilimanjaro's highest point at 19,341ft. The descent follows to Mweka Camp in the upper forest with a lunch break at Barafu.

    Meals
    Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    Included Activities

    • Summit trek from Barafu Hut to Uhuru Peak
    • Descent to Mweka Camp

  6. Day 6

    Mweka Camp to Moshi

After breakfast, you'll descend the rest of the way to Mweka Park Gate to get your summit certificate. The lower sections of trail tend to be wet and muddy, so take your time navigating those parts. From the gate, there's about an hour more to Mweka Village where your private vehicle will pick you up. You'll head back to your hotel in Moshi, and the trek is officially complete.

I just went on 8 day trek with Kilimanjaro Habitas and it was one of the best things I’ve ever done in my lives. I had really great experience with Kilimanjaro Habitas. From the moment I arrived at the airport I was treated with lots of care, each and everything was well organized. My guide Rock was brilliant and made every effort to ensure I had a great trip. Rock and his team were well prepared, extremely knowledgeable and made the experience better than I could ever imagine. I was also blessed with awesome porters, Stanley is an excellent cook. Pio was waiter; he was always ready to help without even asking providing a hot water in the morning with an amazing smile, water for washing before and after serving our meals. Thank you so much Kilimanjaro Habitas for a great time. I would only go with this company if I did it again and have already recommended them to several friends who were considering hiking.
