Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Marrakech to Ouirgane National Park

You'll get picked up in Marrakech and head to Aguersioual where your guide, cook, and muleteers meet you. The first day is an acclimatisation trek through Ouirgane National Park, so the terrain stays fairly gentle with copper green soil and juniper trees scattered around. You'll walk for about 4 to 5 hours before settling into a Gite in the Berber village of Tizian for the night.

    Ouirgane National Park
    Tizian
  2. Day 2

    Ouirgane to Azzaden Valley

After eating breakfast, you'll head up out of the valley and move toward the Azzaden Valley. The landscape opens up nicely here with views of a rushing mountain stream, walnut groves, and Toubkal along with its sister peaks ahead at the valley end. Expect around 7 hours of walking, and you'll stay overnight in either a village Gite or in a camping setup.

  3. Day 3

    Azzaden Valley to Toubkal Refuge

Today's a bit more challenging with a stiff climb out of Azzaden Valley heading toward the Toubkal Refuge. Along the way you'll pass the Ighouliden waterfalls and cross over the Aguelzim Mountain pass at 3,560m/11,680ft. Lunch happens up there with really nice views across the Atlas Range. You'll walk for about 7 hours and sleep at the Toubkal Refuge (Niltner Hut) at 3,200m/10,500ft, most likely sharing a bunk room with other trekkers.

    Meals
Breakfast, Lunch (Lunch with spectacular views over the Atlas Mountain Range), Dinner

    Toubkal Summit to Imlil

Get up early because today you're going for Toubkal's summit at 4,167m/13,671ft. If the weather cooperates, you'll have great views across the Atlas Range and out toward the Sahara Desert. After that, it's a long descent back past the refuge and down a well-worn path to Imlil. This is the longest day of trekking with 8 to 9 hours of walking, including a 900m climb and then about 2,500m descent. You'll stay at Dar Oussagou guesthouse.

There are optional stops if you want to check out the Ouarzazate Film Studios or take a hike. Once you reach Dades Gorge, you can either take a hike or just relax at the hotel. The drive takes 4 to 5 hours total, and you'll spend the night in Dades.

After lunch, you'll drive further into the desert toward Merzouga to pick up supplies, then head to a kasbah to get your camel. As the sun sets, you'll trek about 1.5 hours by camel to a Berber camp for traditional Moroccan dinner and sleep under the stars or in tents. Total driving is 3 to 4 hours.

After cleaning up and having breakfast, you'll drive to Ait Benhaddou, an ancient fortified city with countless kasbahs that have shown up in Hollywood films. Your guide will walk you around the buildings so you can explore. The drive takes 5 to 6 hours, and you'll stay in a hotel close to Ait Benhaddou for the night.

My family (wife and 3 children ages 14, 10, 9) and I had an absolutely wonderful trek to the top of Toubkal. Communication from View Morocco before and during the trip was excellent. Transfer from Marrakesh was slick and we were picked up in a nice air conditioned 7 seater. Our accommodation in Imlil was comfortable, clean and friendly serving traditional Moroccan breakfast. Big thanks to our guide Rashid who was excellent. He was patient and set the pace just right - at no point did we feel hurried or under pressure to go faster. The trek is tough especially in the energy sapping heat of Aug. Rashid was great with the kids and my 9 year old son seemed to really take to him. I'd absolutely do this again and might consider one of the extended treks encompassing more peaks next time. Big thanks to the View Morocco team for looking after us :)
