Hiking & Trekking Tours & Trips in Morocco
Climbing North Africa's tallest mountain, Mount Toubkal, is a doable feat! Take a trek through the Atlas Mountains, visiting Berber villages - there's a bit of scrambling involved near the summit, but the payoff is worth it for vistas that reach all the way to the Sahara and the Atlantic. Evenings spent in traditional mountain gites offer a taste of authentic Moroccan cuisine, and sometimes, you can sleep on the terrace beneath a blanket of stars.

I had a wonderful 7-day experience trekking the Atlas Mountains. I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to escape the crowded tourist areas and immerse myself in the authentic Berber culture of the High Atlas. The scenery was stunning. I loved exploring all the small villages throughout the route. My guide, Ibrahim, was absolutely fantastic - kind, easygoing, and professional. Growing up in these mountains, he provided a unique window into the local culture that I truly appreciated. Our cook, Iahsen, was extremely talented, and I felt lucky to enjoy his delicious meals every day. I really appreciated the Amazigh Voyage team’s flexibility throughout the trip. When my luggage missed a connecting flight, they accommodated a late start so I could retrieve it, and they seamlessly rearranged my itinerary when I decided the conditions were too harsh to summit Mount Toubkal. Because I traveled during a late December cold spell, the journey was occasionally challenging. You stay in authentic Berber homes that sometimes lack heat or hot water, so it is essential to pack accordingly and remain flexible if weather forces a route change. For logistics, I recommend packing light since luggage is carried by donkey, though the staff kindly allowed me to store items I didn't need for the trek. For me, this was a perfect, authentic adventure. Big thanks to the Amazigh Voyage team for all of their hard work and hospitality.

What our customers ask about Hiking & Trekking Tours & Trips in Morocco
What are the best hiking trails in Morocco for different skill levels?
Morocco's trails range from simple walks to challenging mountain ascents. Beginners find their stride on the Atlas Berber Villages trek which takes 4-5 hours daily through villages like Tacheddirt and Imlil. The Rif Mountains near Chefchaouen suit intermediate hikers while Mount Toubkal (4167m) presents a more demanding route. The Ourika Valley offers straightforward day hikes that let you set your own pace. As one TourRadar traveler noted: "The guides and local team were amazing - making sure everyone felt safe and supported no matter their hiking ability."
What is the best time of year for hiking in Morocco's Atlas Mountains?
Plan your Atlas Mountains trek between April and October for the most reliable conditions. The High Atlas trails around Toubkal are clearest from June to September with temperatures ranging from 20-25°C (68-77°F). The Rif Mountains bloom with wildflowers in spring while autumn brings pleasant hiking weather to Tazekka National Park. As confirmed by a TourRadar traveler: "We went in September and the weather was perfect - warm days for hiking but not too hot with clear views from the summit of Toubkal."
How physically demanding are Morocco's mountain treks?
The physical requirements vary by route. Mount Toubkal demands 10-12 hour days with a 960m climb to reach 4167m. For an easier experience the Atlas Berber Villages trek covers 4-5 hours daily with 400-500m elevation changes. A TourRadar traveler shared: "The trek to Toubkal was challenging but manageable - we took regular breaks and our guide perfectly paced the group according to everyone's abilities."
Where do you sleep during multi-day hikes in Morocco?
Nights on the trails mix traditional gîtes mountain lodges and camping spots. The Toubkal Refuge provides dorm-style sleeping at 3207m while villages like Tizi Oussem welcome hikers into Berber homes. Those seeking more comfort can book stays at places like Riad Atlas Prestige in Imlil. As one TourRadar reviewer noted: "The mountain accommodations were basic but comfortable and staying in traditional Berber houses gave us an authentic cultural experience."
Are family-friendly hiking options in Morocco?
The Mid Atlas region works well for families with children. The Ourika Valley has gentle paths between villages while the Imlil Valley offers 2-3 hour walks suitable for kids over 8. The Atlas Mountains lodge near Imlil creates a welcoming base for families. As one TourRadar family noted: "The guides were great with our kids adjusting the pace and making the trek fun with stories about local culture and wildlife."
What safety measures are in place for high-altitude treks in Morocco?
Local guides with mountain safety and first aid certifications lead all tours. High-altitude routes like Mount Toubkal include dedicated days for altitude adjustment. Guides carry satellite phones and follow established evacuation plans in remote areas. One TourRadar traveler shared: "Our guide Abdullah was extremely professional checking our oxygen levels daily at the Toubkal Refuge and adjusting the pace to ensure everyone acclimatized properly before the summit attempt."
