Hiking Kilimanjaro was an amazing challenge, and we truly couldn’t have done it without the Great Lake Expedition team. My brother and I wanted to take my 69 year old father on a father and sons outdoors trip. We decided to stretch for hiking to the top of Mt Kilimanjaro. My father is in great shape for his age, but is still old for this type of climb, so we wanted to ensure we had an experienced team supporting us. The Great Lake Expedition team was helpful through the entire experience, from the 80+ emails I sent coordinating the trip and several changes to the itinerary, to the amazing on the ground team of guides and porters. Even the food was actually quite good, which surprised us given how far we were from Moshi/Arusha. They were fun and cheerful when they could be, and immediately flipped to decisive, experienced professionals when they needed to be. They gave us a lot of confidence that we would all be safe on this journey. The Marangu route was incredibly beautiful, and really highlighted the diverse eco systems of the mountain. Each day was well planned out in terms of distance and elevation gain. On the summit night, the Great Lake Expedition team carefully monitored us all, especially our father, and supported him both up and down the mountain to ensure his safety. As he displayed signs of AMS after reaching Uhuru Peak, the lead guide quickly took him down the mountain to ensure his safety, and he quickly regained his balance and strength. Hiking Kilimanjaro is definitely not for the faint of heart. It’s by far the hardest physical challenge I’ve ever done. And even with the incredible support of the Great Lake Expedition team, it was definitely a stretch for a 69 year old man. But if you are up for the task, you won’t regret the journey!Show more

Signed up for the 8-day Lemosho route to climb Mount Kilimanjaro followed by 5-day Safari tour. I chose Great Lake Expedition because of the seamless assistance provided; information was readily available on the website and Roster is quick in her replies. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro was a breeze due to the care and comfort provided by my guide, Muntari, and team. Appreciated Muntari's care in checking on my well-being constantly throughout the entire trek, especially going on short acclimatisation hikes to lower the chances of altitude sickness. My first ever safari experience was pleasant with plenty of explanation from my guide and we managed to spot the big 5 successfully. Incredible experience! The team at Great Lake Expedition did an amazing job facilitating our ascent to the rooftop of Africa, from booking and planning through the climb up and down. John, Robert and every single porter on the team were incredible in showing us how to safely enjoy the beauty and challenge of summiting the mountain. One of our biggest challenges was making sure we didn’t disappoint the chef, by eating too little and causing him to think we didn’t like the food! We were constantly amazed at how the team worked to accommodate us to make the difficult challenge that would be faced as easy and safe as possible, ensuring everyone knew when and where to push but also checking our pulse and O2 readings every day along with documenting symptoms. Every detail that could ever be thought of has been practiced and inspired awe while seeing it unfold in less forgiving environments as the days progress. Payment information
- For any tour departing before September 9th, 2026 a full payment is necessary. For tours departing after September 9th, 2026, a minimum payment of 20% is required to confirm your booking with Great Lake Expedition. The final payment will be automatically charged to your credit card on the designated due date. The final payment of the remaining balance is required at least 60 days prior to the departure date of your tour. TourRadar never charges you a booking fee and will charge you in the stated currency.
