At Stewert Island: 1) whats the difference between the Wild Kiwi and the Beak and Feathers Kiwi tours? And, 2) Is it possible to do 2 of the excursions, or can only choose one? 3) Diffference bewtween the Village & Bay trip and the Ulva Island explorer?

can I choose which of these excursios to add after I book?

    • Intrepid TravelOperatorWritten May 2026

Yes, absolutely. You will be able to choose and add the optional excursions after booking based on your own preferences. Please note that all optional activities need to be booked directly on the ground during the tour.

      Sally

so to clarify, the excursions offered for the Stewert Island segment, for example, they will be booked at or before we get to Stewert island, not before the tour starts?

      Sally

      TravelerWritten May 2026

can you send more coverage details on the travel insur you offer when I'm booking my tour?

    • Intrepid TravelOperatorWritten May 2026

Yes, that is correct. Please speak with your tour leader on Day 1 regarding your preferred optional activity, and they will assist with the booking arrangements.

    • Intrepid TravelOperatorWritten May 2026

TourRadar does not provide its own insurance policies, but during the booking process we partner with third-party insurance providers. Coverage details (such as medical coverage limits, trip cancellation, baggage protection, and any exclusions) can vary depending on your country of residence and the specific policy offered for your booking.

To see the full coverage details for your tour:

      1. Go to your tour's booking page on TourRadar.
      2. Start the booking process until you reach the section where travel insurance appears.
      3. Next to the insurance option, look for a "Policy details" - This will open the full policy wording or a detailed summary of benefits, including coverage limits, what is and isn't covered, and any conditions.

Wild Kiwi Encounter vs Kiwi Spotting Experience

      Different providers:
Wild Kiwi Encounter = Real NZ
Kiwi Spotting = Beaks & Feathers

      Duration:
Real NZ = longer (about 4.5 hours)
Beaks & Feathers = shorter (about 1.5–2 hours)

      Price:
Real NZ is more expensive, mainly because it's a longer, more in-depth experience with more included.

      Overall:
Both are good, but Real NZ offers a more extensive experience and is known for strong quality, values, and conservation work.

Village Bay Trip vs Ulva Island Explorer
      Village Bay Trip:
      -Short (about 1.5 hours)
      - A land tour of Stewart Island with a local guide
      - Includes stops for short walks, viewpoints, and photos
      - Good for a general introduction to the island

      Ulva Island Explorer:
      - Longer and more immersive
      - Includes a boat cruise plus a guided walk
      - Explore Ulva Island Bird Sanctuary
      - Learn about wildlife, history, and native birds
      - More focused on nature and wildlife experience

Regarding the question "Is it possible to do 2 of the excursions, or can you only choose one?":
It really depends on what optional activities the guests pick for their time in Stewart Island, if they pick more of a full day activity then they might not have as much time to do a 2nd activity. However, the day they travel from the Catlins to Stewart Island, once they reach Stewart Island they will have time after lunch for exploration of the island, so depending on the chosen activity and timing, they might be able to do an activity on Day 10 as well as then having a full day in Stewart Island on Day 11 if all goes to plan with the weather, etc. The tour leader will be able to help organize timings and activities on the road.

Where's the meeting point location at Christchurch and finishing location at Queenstown?

    • Intrepid TravelOperatorWritten September 2024

Since you are not looking to travel until 2026 we cannot guarantee your accommodations on Stewart Island. The earlier you book the better chance of receiving a hotel stay with private facilities. The accommodations on the island are very limited, by pre-planning and booking early you have a better chance.

    Asked on July 15th, 2022

My husband can walk with a cane for a mile or so, but is rather slow. He also needs to use a restroom frequently (90-120 minutes). He would be fine sitting in the van or on a bench while others walk, as long as there were interesting things to see. Is this tour or one of your other NZ tours suitable for him? Would the driver/other passengers happily accommodate his need for frequent restroom breaks?

    • Intrepid TravelOperatorWritten August 2022

Yes, I think that should be fine. As long as he has someone traveling with him who can assist with stairs or uneven floors when on a walk. The Guide will check in with him before the walks, it is up to the guide to make the final decision if a walk is safe for him to do. If he won't be able to attend a walk he might need to wait in the van or at a nearby café for a while. But most of the activities should be fine for him.
