Itinerary

  1. Day 1

Death Valley National Park to Bishop

Start early in Death Valley National Park with a guided tour hitting the main spots. You'll stop at Zabriskie Point for photos, walk through Artist's Palette to see the colorful rock formations, then check out Badwater Basin Salt Flats which sits below sea level. The Furnace Creek Visitor Center gives you some context about the park, and Devils Golf Course offers another quick walk through unusual terrain. Mesquite Sand Dunes round out the morning exploration (temperatures around 120°F/49°C in summer, so bring water). After a picnic lunch, drive through the dramatic landscape heading toward Bishop where you'll camp for the night. It's about 2 hours of driving through some incredible scenery, so don't rush it.

  2. Day 2

    Bishop to Yosemite Valley

This morning you'll cross Tioga Pass heading toward Yosemite Valley on a route that's genuinely beautiful. Stop at Olmsted Point to see the high country views, then continue to Lake Tenaya where the water reflects the surrounding peaks. Tuolumne Meadows comes next, showing you the alpine landscape before you drop down toward Mono Lake. The contrasts between ecosystems make this drive feel longer than it actually is. Once you reach Yosemite Valley, head to the Valley Visitor Center to check out the exhibits and get oriented. You'll have time for a short walk or just settling into your lodging before the day ends.

  3. Day 3

    Yosemite Valley

Spend the full day exploring Yosemite Valley trails and viewpoints. If you go with a guided tour, you'll see Bridalveil Falls up close, then move to Lower Yosemite Falls for a different perspective of the water. Half Dome and El Capitan dominate the landscape from various spots throughout the valley. The walks range from pretty easy strolls to more challenging hikes depending on what you choose. If you'd rather skip the guided option, you can rent a bike and cycle along the Merced River on flat paths, or just take your time at different overlooks and enjoy the granite cliffs from various angles. Either way, bring plenty of water and wear sunscreen.

  4. Day 4

    Yosemite Valley to San Francisco

Head to San Francisco for your final day, which involves several hours of driving from Yosemite. A guide leads you through the city hitting the major sites. You'll stop at Fisherman's Wharf to see the waterfront action, then head to Pier 39 for shops and views. Haight Ashbury shows you the historic neighborhood, and you'll drive across the Golden Gate Bridge or view it from nearby. The tour wraps up around 5pm, so plan accordingly for travel back or evening activities in the city.
