Death Valley National Park to Bishop
Start early in Death Valley National Park with a guided tour hitting the main spots. The Furnace Creek Visitor Center gives you some context about the park, and Devils Golf Course offers another quick walk through unusual terrain. Mesquite Sand Dunes round out the morning exploration (temperatures around 120°F/49°C in summer, so bring water). This morning you'll cross Tioga Pass heading toward Yosemite Valley on a route that's genuinely beautiful. Stop at Olmsted Point to see the high country views, then continue to Lake Tenaya where the water reflects the surrounding peaks. Tuolumne Meadows comes next, showing you the alpine landscape before you drop down toward Mono Lake. The contrasts between ecosystems make this drive feel longer than it actually is. Once you reach Yosemite Valley, head to the Valley Visitor Center to check out the exhibits and get oriented. You'll have time for a short walk or just settling into your lodging before the day ends.

Half Dome and El Capitan dominate the landscape from various spots throughout the valley. The walks range from pretty easy strolls to more challenging hikes depending on what you choose. If you'd rather skip the guided option, you can rent a bike and cycle along the Merced River on flat paths, or just take your time at different overlooks and enjoy the granite cliffs from various angles.
