Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Kilimanjaro Airport to Moshi

You'll arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport where your transfer driver meets you for the drive to your hotel in Moshi. Once you settle in, the rest of the day is yours to do as you like. Some people relax at the hotel while others take a taxi into town to check out the local area. That evening, there's a briefing session to go over what to expect during your trek.

  2. Day 2

Londorossi Gate to Big Tree Camp

Head out early to Londorossi Gate for national park registration and paperwork. From there, you'll drive roughly 15 km on a rough track that winds into the rainforest where your trek officially starts. The moderately steep trail takes you through dense forest for about 2 and a half hours until you reach Big Tree Camp. An armed ranger will be with your group for the first two days.

  3. Day 3

Big Tree Camp to Shira Camp 2

Today you trek through thick rainforest on a narrow trail that gradually opens up into heath and moorland as the elevation increases. After crossing Shira Ridge, you'll arrive at Shira Camp 1 around lunchtime, and from here you can see Mt Meru and the Rift Valley spreading out below. Later, you'll continue climbing about 400 meters over the next three hours to reach Shira Camp 2 where you'll spend the night. If the weather cooperates, you might catch sunset views of Kibo's peak.

  4. Day 4

Shira Camp 2 to Barranco Camp

You'll climb roughly 740 meters today while keeping your sleeping elevation only slightly higher than yesterday, which helps your body adjust to the altitude. The trek takes you above the Shira Plateau toward Lava Tower through an alpine desert where vegetation becomes sparse. As you continue, you'll walk through the wide Barranco Valley with its distinctive lobelia plants and giant senecios. After 6 to 7 hours of trekking, you'll reach Barranco Camp, which many say is one of the most beautiful spots on the mountain.

  5. Day 5

    Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

This day involves plenty of ups and downs along the trail, and it includes the steepest section of the entire route, the Barranco Wall, where you might need to use your hands to pull yourself up at certain points. Your guides are there to help you through the toughest spots. Once you've conquered the wall, the path follows along the mountain ridge where you'll see fantastic views of Kibo's southern glacier and the summit. You should reach Karanga Camp by lunchtime.

Spend the afternoon stretching out and taking it easy to prepare for tonight's big push. Have an early dinner so you can try to get some rest before your guides wake you around midnight to start the final climb to the summit.

From there, spend another 1 to 2 hours walking along the crater ridge until you reach Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters and see the sunrise from Africa's highest point. After photos and a break, you'll head back down to Barafu Camp by midday for lunch and rest. Later, you'll descend about 3 hours further to Mweka Camp.

Everything worked out excellently. The support before and during the Kili climb was exemplary and professional. Elisabeth was always very helpful and had an answer to all my questions. It had not been easy for me to find a tour operator from Switzerland for the ascent of Kili via the Western Breach Route. Finally I found one. Already within 24h Elisabeth answered my first email. All in all it was a great experience to climb Kilimanjaro via a special lonely route including crater camp. I can recommend Tanzania Horizon at any time.

I convinced my wife to summit Kilimanjaro for my 50th birthday. After a lot of research, we decided on Tanzania Horizon Safari. They coordinated our trek as well as two different safari trips. Every detail was taken care of including transport to and from the airport, lodging and they even showed up with a birthday cake the morning we started our trek. Godwin and Jonas were our guides during our Kilimanjaro trek and were outstanding. Supportive, encouraging and fun to be around. Godwin and I really hit it off and have become friends communicating regularly. My wife may not have made it to the top without Jonas support. Wilson, the cook, made us three meals a day which were all delicious and plentiful. The porters were fun loving and hard working. After we summited they celebrated our accomplishment with song and dance making the experience even more special. This group really made this an epic adventure. We are very thankful were trusted Tanzania Horizon Safari and would recommend them without hesitation.

I had a wonderful experience with Tanzania Horizon Safaris on a climb of Kili using the Lemosho Route followed by an incredible experience in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater! My guide Jonas was amazing! He was knowledgeable, friendly and trustworthy, expertly guiding me up the mountain and making sure I was feeling well and hydrated all the way up! The food was very good on both the climb and the safari and everything was organized well. Thank you so much Tanzania Horizon Safaris!
