The hiking portion takes you through montane forest on forest trails, and you'll gain elevation steadily over 6km to reach Mti Mkubwa campsite. The elevation climbs from 1830m to 2650m/6000ft to 8700ft throughout the day.

Shira 2 camp sits on moorland meadows by a stream and that's where you'll finish. This is a longer hiking day lasting 7 to 8 hours with elevation gain from 2650m to 3850m/8700ft to 12,600ft.

From Shira Plateau, head east up a ridge toward Kibo's peak, then turn southeast toward Lava Tower, the formation locals call the Shark's Tooth, which sits at 4650m/15,250ft. You'll pass the Arrow Glacier junction and then descend to Barranco Camp. Although you end near the same elevation where you started, this day matters greatly for acclimatization and getting your body ready for summit day ahead.

Leave Barranco after breakfast and climb the steep Barranco Wall up to Karanga Valley where it joins the Mweka Trail. The hike lasts about 3 to 4 hours through alpine desert habitat with minimal elevation gain, bringing you to 4050m/13,300ft. It's one of the shorter days on the route.

    Summit Day to Mweka Camp

Start between midnight and 2 am and head northwest up through heavy scree between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. The push toward Stella Point on the crater rim is the most mentally and physically tough section of the entire trek. After reaching Stella Point, you'll catch a short rest and watch the sunrise, then hike the final hour to Uhuru Peak at 5895m/19,340ft, Africa's highest point. The descent takes you back through Barafu for lunch, then down to Mweka Camp. Gaiters and trekking poles help manage the loose gravel on the way down.

The trail can turn wet and muddy in the lower sections, so gaiters and poles are useful here too. Then walk another hour to Mweka Village where your driver will be waiting to take you back to your hotel in Moshi.
