Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Bari to Vieste

Your guide meets you at Bari airport or train station, then it's about an hour's drive south to Vieste. Once you check in at your hotel, spend the afternoon walking through the old town with its narrow cobblestone streets and white-washed buildings. The sea air hits differently when you're surrounded by those dramatic limestone cliffs dropping straight into the water. By evening, grab dinner somewhere overlooking the coast if you're up for it.

  2. Day 2

    Vieste

This morning you'll head out on a boat trip through the sea caves along the Gargano coast. You'll paddle or motor through natural stone arches, slide into hidden caves, and see water so clear it's almost unreal. After lunch, you've got the afternoon free. Some people hit the beach to relax, while others keep exploring the towns and beaches nearby on their own schedule.

    Gargano sea caves
  3. Day 3

    Vieste to Trani

A private car picks you up and takes you south toward Trani, but there are two stops along the way. First is San Giovanni Rotondo, a pilgrimage site with religious significance. Then Monte Sant'Angelo sits high on a hilltop with medieval buildings and spiritual history. Once you reach Trani in the afternoon, you've got free time to wander the historic center and take in this port town that sits right on the Adriatic.

  4. Day 4

    Trani

This morning a local guide shows you around Trani, starting with the cathedral that sits practically in the sea. You'll also walk through the Jewish quarter with its tight alleys and historical character. After that, you head inland to Castel del Monte, this mysterious octagonal fortress built by Frederick II back in the 1200s. As the day winds down, you'll have drinks with a view during sunset, looking out at all that medieval architecture.

  5. Day 5

    Trani to Bari

Start early at a local dairy where you'll actually make mozzarella and burrata cheese with your hands. It's one of those hands-on food experiences that sticks with you. In the afternoon, there's a Confetti Museum to see (it's about traditional sweets), then you visit an olive oil mill and taste their extra virgin oils. From there, you head back to Bari for the evening.

  6. Day 6

    Bari - Matera - Bari

Today is all about Matera, this ancient city carved into hillsides with stacked stone houses called Sassi. It's genuinely unlike other towns you've seen. On your way back to Bari, you'll stop for a street food tour sampling focaccia, sgagliozze (fried polenta), and panzerotti (fried pastry pockets). This is the food that locals actually eat, not what restaurants serve tourists.

  7. Day 7

    Bari - Alberobello - Polignano a Mare - Bari

You'll drive to Alberobello first, where the whole town is filled with cone-shaped trulli houses that look like something from a storybook. After wandering those fairy-tale streets, head over to Polignano a Mare, which sits on white cliffs right above the sea. It's a shorter drive back to Bari, so you're back by evening without rushing.

The day starts in Ostuni, the White City, with its whitewashed buildings and views across the Itria Valley. From there, continue south to Lecce, which is basically the Baroque capital of southern Italy. The buildings, the churches, the piazzas all have this ornate golden look. End the evening with a drink and appetizers in the old town center.

Disappointing in some respects as follows 1) little to no commentary on the bus 2) no headsets to hear the guide when taking photos 3) picking up and dropping off passengers in Bari cost us 2 hours of our time on the tour
