Most tourists visit Japan down the same well-trodden path and this is the 11 Day Explorer Central Japan, where they feel as though they are given a map they did not get in the guidebook. Travel was also flawless, as local trains, scenic mountain drives and private transfers brought the group to their respective destinations with no ills of any kind. There was a great deal to be said about the accommodations, be it a traditional farmhouse stay in the Alps or a quiet stay in a preserved post town. Food was like the food of a place; I'd never eaten any river fish, any mountain vegetables, any regional specialty again. Our guide was the highlight of the trip, exuding enthusiasm for the region's skilled craftsmen, festivals and village customs, and knowing when to step back and allow a moment to settle. On the eleventh day, Central Japan had ceased to be just a detour. It seemed it was always the place to be.Show more
