We completed the Switzerland by Rail tour followed by the river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest. The land based tour requires a lot of walking. There are no transfers from the station to the hotel, with two exceptions, one transfer is by ferry and the other by bus because the hotel is 10 km out of town. All other transfers from 500 mt up to 900 mt are on foot. For the land based tour you need to carry everything with you for the day as your luggage goes by separate courier to the next hotel. There are certain excursions on the land based tour that will be a challenge for older people, or those with health issues. APT do not disclose the risks associated with these prior to selling you the tour. River cruising first class. Consider the additional cost of a balcony room, as during the second week of the cruise, the ships are moored two and three abreast and your balcony is only 1 mt away from the ship next door.Show more

Low water levels in the RHINE-MAIN-DANUBE CANAL meant we had to disembark from Nuremberg, then travel 250km by bus to Vishofen on the upper reaches of the Danube. Bonus for a former Geography professor. Joined APT SOLARA for journey to BUDAPEST. Fabulous experience, friendly staff, great food, well organised tours with knowledgeable local guides.
