Itinerary
- Day 1
Paro to Thimphu
You'll fly into Paro and connect with your Bhutanese guide for the drive to Thimphu. After getting settled at your hotel, the day includes visiting Tshicho Dzong and the Memorial Chorten. Later you'll browse through local handicraft shops and check out the city's main emporium to get a feel for what Bhutan offers in terms of traditional crafts and goods.

- Day 2
Thimphu
Thimphu itself is fairly compact, so you'll cover quite a bit with its wide, tree-lined streets making it easy to navigate. You'll visit a Gompa monastery and take in views of Tshicho Dzong from different angles. There's also a tour of the golf course in upper Thimphu, and you'll learn how locals make traditional paper using the daphne plant, which is pretty interesting if you're into traditional crafts.

- Day 3
Thimphu to Trongsa
The drive to Punakha takes about 6 to 7 hours and crosses two significant passes. You'll start with Dochu La at 10,000 feet/3,048 meters where the views open up to the eastern Himalayas, including Gangkar Punsum at 24,770 feet/7,550 meters, Bhutan's highest peak. After that, you'll head over Pele La Pass at 11,152 feet/3,400 meters to see Mt Chomolhari, considered the sacred peak in Bhutanese culture.

- Day 4
Trongsa to Bumthang
You'll drive roughly 2.5 hours across Yotong La pass at 11,234 feet/3,425 meters, then descend into the Chumey and Bumthang Valleys. The route takes you through Prakar monastery, and afterward you'll stop at Yathra weaving centers where locals work with colorful wool, creating traditional textiles that have been made in these valleys for generations.

Bumthang to Punakha
Start with Bumthang sightseeing in the morning, then begin the 6 to 7 hour drive back to Punakha, which sits at 1,400 meters/4,593 feet in a much warmer location. Once you arrive, you'll visit Punakha Dzong and hike to Chimi Lhakhang, a temple built in 1499 dedicated to a divine madman. The walk takes you across rice fields after leaving the road at Sopsokha, offering a nice sense of the rural landscape.

- Day 6
Punakha to Paro
You'll drive west via Dochula Pass at 3,080 meters/10,104 feet to see Himalayan peaks above 7,000 meters, assuming the weather cooperates. From there it's about 2 more hours to Paro. In the afternoon you'll visit the national museum, see Rinpung Dzong, and check out other sights around the Paro area to round out your time before departure.
