Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Budapest

    You'll arrive in Budapest by 3:30 pm and get settled on the ship by 5 pm. Spend your first afternoon wandering around Hungary's capital on the Danube, then head to dinner onboard. Later that evening, the ship cruises through the Danube Bend toward Visegrád while you enjoy a Hungarian meal and river views.

  2. Day 2

    Visegrád

    At Visegrád, you can pick from several options: hike up to Count Dracula's prison tower, paddle a canoe through the Bend Region, or see the Medieval Knights Tournament at the Lower Castle with traditional demonstrations. Afterward, check out Palotatház where artisans work with old techniques as stonecutters, smiths, potters, and papermakers. Late afternoon, the ship heads toward Vienna.

    Vienna

    Vienna offers different guided options for the day. Bike along the Ringstrasse and pedestrian streets, meet locals during a behind-the-scenes food tour, or do traditional sightseeing at Belvedere Palace to see Klimt's 'Kiss'. In the afternoon, walk through Kärntnerstrasse and try Sachertorte at a café. Optional visits to Schönbrunn or an evening waltz concert are available.

Mid-morning, cruise to Mauthausen where activities include biking along the Danube through farmland, visiting St. Florian Monastery from the 9th century, or touring Mauthausen Memorial. The ship sails to Linz this afternoon with live entertainment on board, and then continues toward Engelhartszell by late evening.

    Engelhartszell - Schlögen Oxbow - Vilshofen

    You've got three options to start the day depending on what appeals to you. Bike out to a former Trappist monastery, join a guided cider cellar tour to learn about local production, or head to Engelszell Abbey which has that rococo architecture and includes beer and cheese tasting. Once you're back on the ship, the afternoon opens up too. You can relax on the Sky Deck while the boat navigates through the Schlögen Oxbow, this dramatic horseshoe bend in the river that's pretty striking. If you'd rather be active, there's a scenic guided hike following the riverbank. Then as evening comes around, you'll continue sailing toward Vilshofen.

    We would like to thank our Statesman Attendee that took care of all our needs in our room 107. He was friendly and did an amazing job, Marisio our waiter served us with the highest respect and friendliness. Over all Avalon have very good staff and always a smile- nothing too much trouble. The ship was so clean, food was spectacular. We had a surprise group of singers Gwen and Charles who brought great entertainment. The other entertainer was amazing. Loved the top deck BBQ. We met lots of new friends aboard. Thank you Avalon for a trip well executed.
