Itinerary
- Day 1
Kathmandu to Bhadrapur
You'll fly from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur on a short 45-minute flight, and the landscape shifts noticeably as you descend into a different climate and culture. From there, a car or jeep takes you through to Birtamod where you'll spend the night.

Birtamod to Taplejung
Starting early from Birtamod, you drive through tea gardens and paddy fields toward Taplejung via Paachthar and Illam on an 8 to 9 hour journey. The scenery changes dramatically as you pass through three distinct weather zones, from hot flatlands to cold hills to snowy rocky terrain. You'll stop in Ilam to try local milk products like curd and ghee, and catch glimpses of Kanchenjunga and Makalu peaks along the way. You'll arrive at Taplejung after dark.

Landmarks Kanchenjunga Makalu - Day 3
Taplejung to Chiruwa
Your trekking starts from Taplejung heading to Chiruwa, passing through cardamom plantations near Miltung where birds sing and rivers rush. The Tamur Nadi river creates a pleasant backdrop, and this first trekking day is relatively easy with only gradual climbs, quite different from the steeper routes in other regions.

Landmarks Tamur Nadi (Tamor River) - Day 4
Chiruwa to Lelep
From Chiruwa, you trek upward along the Tamor river through green hills and deep valleys. After reaching Taplethok to handle permit fees, you continue toward Lelep on a trail that winds through meadows with rocky slabs forming natural stairs and good mountain scenery.

- Day 5
Lelep to Amjilosa
This is a harder trekking day with steep climbs and narrow bridges crossing deep ravines and loud rivers. The Tamor river splits at a junction with Ghunsa Khola, and you'll follow the trail alongside Ghunsa Khola through challenging terrain. After passing through Jauban and Lamatar, you reach the isolated village of Amjilosa, which sits on a hillside with nice mountain views, and you'll stay overnight there.

Landmarks Ghunsa Khola 

- Day 6
Amjilosa to Gyabla
You trek uphill through rhododendron forests (red blooms in spring), pass a waterfall beyond Thyanyani, and cross a bridge over Sakechung Khola. The trail continues through Birdungu Danda where the Ghunsa peak comes into view, then rocky boulders give way to the meadows of Gyabla where hotel options are limited.

Landmarks Sakechung Khola Ghunsa Peak - Day 7
Gyabla to Ghunsa
From Gyabla to Ghunsa, the trek splits into two phases with Phole between them. The climb to Phole is steep and tiring, but after Phole the terrain eases up. You'll pass memorials and chorten dedicated to WWF helicopter crash victims, cross several small rivers, and see a large mani wall before reaching Tashi Choeling Monastery with its Lord Buddha paintings. You'll rest at Ghunsa once you arrive.

Landmarks Tashi Choeling Monastery - Day 8
Ghunsa
Today is an acclimatization day at Ghunsa to help your body adjust to the altitude. If you want, there are optional short walks to nearby viewpoints, though the mountain views stay similar to what you've already seen. You'll head back to Ghunsa for the evening.

- Day 9
Ghunsa to Thulo Dhungo
You trek on rocky trails with chilly winds and difficult conditions, navigating pointed cliffs and overhanging rocks past a frozen waterfall. Turquoise glacier walls line the eastern side, and you reach Thulo Dhungo Shrine with its huge trident of Lord Shiva. Mount Kumbhakarna comes into view in a way that's really striking.

Thulo Dhungo to Ramtang
Trekking continues with views of Mera peak and the massive glaciers of Kambachen becoming more visible. As you get closer to Ramtang, the views become quite good with overhanging glaciers on rocky terrain that look like icicles about to drop. Juniper bushes and alpine trees line the path along with waterfalls and snowy meadows. You'll see blue sheep running down the snowy hills. After Ramtang, the trail gets easier and Pathivara Chuli starts to become visible.

Ramtang to Lhonak
The first few hours of trekking are straightforward and easy, but rocky boulders and icy patches slow you down later. What makes it worthwhile are the views of Kanchenjunga and neighboring peaks. You reach the base camp of Kanchenjunga, which not everyone manages to reach, and the panoramic views here are rare. After spending time at the base camp, you descend back to Lhonak for the night.

Lhonak to Ghunsa
You descend from Lhonak back to Ghunsa, retracing the same path you hiked on the way up.

Ghunsa to Amjilosa
After breakfast, you trek from Ghunsa back to Amjilosa through forests, pastures, ridges, and streams with white mountain views. The terrain involves rocky ups and downs throughout. Amjilosa is called the honey town, and you'll see honey stored at local houses. You'll stay at a teahouse overnight.

Amjilosa to Taplethok
From Amjilosa, you trek back to Taplethok using the same route you came in on. You'll stay at a teahouse for the night.

Taplejung to Birtamod
You drive back from Taplejung to Bhadrapur and then on to Birtamod, taking the same route you came in. The drive passes through tea gardens and paddy fields along the highway, and the scenery is nice. Once you reach Birtamod, you'll check into your hotel for the night.

Birtamod to Kathmandu
