I went during the winter and I really appreciated having an experienced tour guide/van driver who knew how to navigate the snow/ice/wind safely! I know I definitely couldn't have done that myself. We enjoyed our trip around the country and our tour guide, Peter was great. Very knowledgeable about Iceland's history and traditions and a solid driver. It did seem like there was poor communication between drivers and the tour operator. It seemed as if Peter had to scramble think ahead to plan for lodging/food availability/changes in the schedule in the moment rather than the operator arranging these vital components beforehand. We were also surprised how full the bus was. We were under the impression group sizes were to be reduced due to the current pandemic. Instead, the bus was so full I travelled with my backpack on my lap for the entire trip. There were some excursions we were unable to participate in such as the VOK Bathes due to a limited number of people allowed in the natural spring at the same time due to COVID restrictions. That was disappointing. Same was true for the beer bath. We did not participate in the lava cave excursion either as that activity was only available for the 8 day tour and we were on the 6 day tour. Troll Expeditions/touradar has initiated a refund for the activities that were prepaid. However, we did feel like it was misleading to advertise for an excursion that was not available on the same schedule as the tour we signed up for. On our last day another driver was arranged to pick up people from the 6 day tour as Peter continued with the people in our group who signed up for 8 days. The new bus driver was late which meant a late arrival in Reykjavik. Many group members missed their COVID test appointments for their flights home and had to reschedule their flights. The country is stunning. Each place more beautiful than the last. Amazing scenery with vibrant colors. Picturesque and peaceful. There a few places we stayed during the tour that stood out. We stayed at a beautiful farmhouse and a really nice place in Vik. The locals were friendly, welcoming and helpful. We enjoyed the glacier hike and the ice caving adventure the best. In December, there are limited daylight hours so it was challenging to see all of the scheduled events/sightseeing opportunities each day. Our guide made every effort to ensure everyone on the tour was comfortable and the accommodations were pleasing. He also rescheduled events when we "lost" a day due to extreme weather conditions. Overall, we did have a wonderful trip but felt like the tour company could have communicated more effectively with our guide to reduce the frequency of miscommunications within the group. We would definitely visit Iceland again in the future but would be selecting a different tour company for the trip.Show more
