  • Day 1

    Reykjavik Arrival

    Land at Keflavík International Airport and head to Reykjavik. Book afternoon flights to avoid morning traffic. The trip to downtown Reykjavik takes about 45 minutes.

    North Iceland & Akureyri (300 km)

    Leave at 9 AM and drive through Hvalfjördur tunnel toward Borgarnes. Stop at Glaumbær turf farm to experience authentic Icelandic history. Visit Skagafjördur to see Icelandic horses. Reach Akureyri by evening. Try Forest Lagoon for a relaxing soak. It's less busy than Blue Lagoon and perfect after driving all day.

    Lake Mývatn Area (250 km)

    Start at Goðafoss waterfall before exploring Lake Mývatn's volcanic landscape. Visit Dimmuborgir's lava formations and Grjótagjá cave. Watch bubbling mud pots at Námaskarð's geothermal area. End at Dettifoss waterfall. Bring sturdy shoes for slippery paths. Stay overnight in Egilsstaðir.

    East Fjords (250 km)

    Get to Gullfoss waterfall early to beat the crowds. Watch Strokkur geyser erupt every 5 minutes at Geysir.   • Day 1

    Reykjavik

    Begin your Iceland journey in the capital. Take a morning walk through downtown and visit the impressive Hallgrímskirkja church. One traveler noted: "The scenery was spectacular right from day one, and our guide gave us excellent tips about local restaurants away from the tourist crowds."

    Reykjavik to Akureyri

    Drive north to Akureyri for 5-6 hours. Spend your afternoon exploring the old town of Iceland's second-largest city. You can take a whale watching tour in Eyjafjörður fjord. Pick the later afternoon slot since morning waters tend to be rougher. If you get seasick easily bring motion sickness medication.

    Lake Mývatn Area

    Start with Goðafoss waterfall before heading to Lake Mývatn. You'll see the unusual Dimmuborgir lava formations and the active Námaskarð geothermal area. A traveler shared: "The volcanic landscape around Mývatn was unlike anything I'd ever seen - bring good hiking boots as the terrain is quite rough."

    East Fjords to Höfn

    Take a scenic 4-5 hour drive along the eastern fjords. Look out for wild reindeer on your way. You can stop at small fishing villages and see Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe. End your day in Höfn where you can try their famous langoustine.

    Jökulsárlón and Skaftafell

    Visit Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon to see enormous icebergs floating out to sea. A visitor suggested: "Go early to Diamond Beach - the morning light on the ice chunks is incredible. Bring waterproof boots as the black sand gets very wet." You can also take a glacier hike at Skaftafell but book it ahead of time. The day ends with a drive to Vík.

    South Coast and Golden Circle

    Start at Reynisfjara's black sand beach but watch out for the waves. Visit two beautiful waterfalls: Seljalandsfoss and Gullfoss. You'll also see the bubbling Geysir hot springs and walk between continents at Þingvellir National Park. These stops are essential for any week-long Iceland trip.

    Reykjavik

    Spend your last morning in Reykjavik. You might want to try snorkeling at Silfra between tectonic plates. If you do, plan to stay an extra night since return times vary between 2-5 PM.
