Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Treuchtlingen

You'll arrive in Treuchtlingen, a quiet town tucked into the Altmühltal Nature Park. This is your day to settle in and take advantage of the Altmühltherme thermal bath, which is right there in town. After checking in, head over to relax in the thermal waters and get ready for the hiking ahead.

    Breakfast

    Optional Activities

    Altmühltherme
  2. Day 2

    Treuchtlingen to Pappenheim

This morning you're hiking with the Altmühl river alongside you for most of the day. You'll pass the Devil's Pulpit viewpoint, which gives you a good vantage point over the valley, then continue toward Hollerstein. By afternoon, you reach Medieval Pappenheim, and the castle here sits on a hilltop overlooking everything, so you'll get those views as you wrap up the day.

    Breakfast

    Included Activities

    • Hiking from Treuchtlingen to Pappenheim with river views
    Landmarks/POIs
    Devil's Pulpit
    Pappenheim Castle
    Hollerstein viewpoint
  3. Day 3

    Pappenheim to Dollnstein

Today's hike takes you up to higher elevation paths heading toward Solnhofen. This area is known for its limestone slabs and fossils that are around 140 million years old if you're interested in that sort of thing. You'll pass the Twelve Apostles rock formation before dropping down to Dollnstein, which sits in what's called the primeval Danube valley. It's a longer day, so pace yourself accordingly.

  4. Day 4

    Dollnstein to Eichstätt

You'll walk through forests and open juniper heaths today on a mountain path that leads to Eichstätt. This town is a baroque diocesan center, so the architecture is quite nice. Willibald's castle is positioned above the town, and from there you can look down on the charming alleyways and older buildings scattered throughout. Spend time wandering around if you have energy left.

  5. Day 5

    Eichstätt to Kipfenberg

This is one of the more involved days. You'll hike alpine paths with views of the valley and rock faces as you go. Along the way, you'll stop at Buchenhüller mammoth cave, then walk through the Gugoldinger Wacholderheide nature protection area. After that, you'll pass the Roman fort Vetoniana and a Limes watch tower before reaching Kipfenberg. It's a day with history and nature mixed together.

  6. Day 6

    Kipfenberg to Beilngries

Start this morning in the Anlauter valley with good views around you. You'll hike to Kinding first, where there's a fortified church worth seeing. From there, you'll continue on paths that run along panoramic overlooks of the Altmühl valley with unusual rock formations dotting the landscape. Later you'll reach the Main-Danube canal area before the final steep descent into Beilngries. That descent can be tough on the knees, so take your time.

Hotel choices were great, walking routes were challenging at times due to gain in elevation but what goes up must come down so that helped! Beautiful to experience the peace and tranquility of the countryside.

Highly recommend this trip. The days can be long but the views are worth it. Most of the route is paved so you can probably get away with hiking shoes or trail running shoes. There is luggage transfer available but I didn't need it. The route from Unken to Waidring could be updated but I was able to find an alternate route with the map. Before you start you're given the full itinerary with a navigation system on the app as well as paper copies of everything.

Well organized, no hiccups, beautiful scenery, good exercise (!), great hotels. I've enjoyed the trip quite a lot, there's nothing much to add here, really. One minor thing is that there was a bus pickup location specified towards the end of one of the hikes, it would've been nice to get picked up given you're in unfamiliar territory rather than fumbling your way around and hoping you get on the right bus and go where you're supposed to.
